Grew up in Lafayette; coulee is a very big ditch, like the big open concrete ones you see running through cities. I've never heard it used for a small roadside ditch.

When watching Caddyshack in Louisiana, closed captioning changes the wording to coulee. True story.

The term "coulee" is very common in the Lafayette area for a canal or very large ditch. Everyone is familiar with the term.

A lot of the bigger coulees are named. Coulee Ile des Cannes, Coulee Mine, Francois Coulee, Isaac Verot Coulee.

I have heard that term used only in Lafayette and surrounding areas….very commonly used in that area, though.

Same here. I’ve only heard it from Lafayette people

Coulee Hippolyte is south of Lake Charles. Yeah it’s a ditch

There is also Griffith Coulee, Pithon Coulee and Kayouche Coulle in Lake Charles... drainage ditches all over.

Coulee Crossing Road in Woodworth says hello. FYI, the road does cross over a slough or drainage or .... a coulee.

Caught a lot of Choupic in the Coulees near and in the swamp. One of the best fishing spots in the area is Coulee Michelle.

There is a coulee that is right by folks last house in Rocky Branch. Yep, it’s bigger than a ditch but nowhere near the size of a bayou. It actually dumps into the Ouachita River when the river gets up but becomes landlocked once the river falls. Usually holds a mega shite ton of Wood Ducks but it is a roost so only those brave souls who aren’t scared of dream killers go shoot it up.

I thought it was a redneck term since the South LA folk hardly ever let us borrow a word.
