We went and had a blast there.

Charleston is a great side trip but I’d suggest Savannah, maybe only 20 minutes further and more walkable than Charleston and just as charming.
Savannah has plenty of charm and I've enjoyed my time there, but it is not the same as Charleston if you're looking for great food and nightlife.

I’ve never been for a game but it’s a great little town and campus.

Get town to spend a day or two in. I26 though between Charleston and Columbia is one of my least favorite stretches of interstate to drive though as I did it many times.

I live in Columbia, there’s not too many hotels in the 5 points area. The Vista downtown would be one spot that would be walking distance/around some good bars and restaurants. Otherwise, I’d say hit up the hotels on the outskirts of town and Uber to the bar scene.
Traffic to and from the big games is nightmarish. Plan to leave early and stay late if you want to avoid it. And unfortunately not much in way of bars around the stadium. Mostly tailgating. If you can get one of the train cars they supposedly are nice.

The most annoying part of the stadium experience is that cringe-worthy Gamecock crow they play during the game. It's just...bad.
It's going to very hot, and there's a whole lot of concrete surrounding that Stadium.
I know some people have suggested a Cockaboose (the rail cars), but those things are all privately owned and very expensive, so that's really not an option.
The fans are generally friendly and the stadium is much louder than you might expect. South Carolina fans really, really support their team.

Hotels are clustered downtown and out toward Ft. Jackson. See if you can stay in one of the ones on Gervais.

The house salad vinaigrette at California Dreaming is amazing. I always get the knob hill chicken.
Maurice’s is where mustard based BBQ sauce was invented.

Fly into Charleston, vacation there Thursday and Friday. Columbia is only 90 minutes from there. The tailgate scene is ok. Game atmosphere should be awesome! We’re going.

Should we stay near the football stadium? Or should we stay closer to The District area?
The two times I’ve been we stayed at the Sheraton on Main. I would recommend staying in that area and not close to the stadium because there’s more to do. Five points is also another cool area with bars and restaurants but I’m not sure if there are many hotel/airbnb options.
Some of my favorite spots to eat/drink are Market on Main. They have live music and a pretty cool outside area. Around five points area is Home Team BBQ. You have to go to gourmet shop for breakfast, also in five points. Get your liquor from greens.

They love their Sandstorm while waving white towels too. The entrance to Also Sprach Zarathustra (theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey) is lame and dated, but they really get into it. When their fans get into the game, it can get very loud. I'd say it's louder than Bryant-Denny stadium even though it's smaller, but not nearly as loud as either Tiger Stadium or Jordan-Hare.
They've improved the area around the stadium a lot over the years, but it's still basically a bunch of parking lots. Their campus is nice, but it sits on the edge of downtown Columbia, rather than near the stadium. The city itself reminds me a lot of Baton Rouge, only with a much nicer downtown.

2026 will be USCe
Will LSU play at USCe again in '26? God I hope so! We are planning on going to the game this fall. We were supposed to go in 2015 when the hurricane moved it to BR. They haven't been scheduled to play here since.
Also planning on going to the Clemson game in '25

Yes. I’ve been to six SCAR games in past two years (daughter went there) and their fans are great. Good energy all game. Everyone cool and not too serious. Their student section was great.
Their tailgates are terrible for the most part. Lots of tailgaters…mediocre fixings though.
Already booked our hotel and will be going to the game.

is that too far of a walk to the stadium from the Five Points area? Or are uber/taxis available on game day?
Too far to walk comfortably. Plenty of parking near stadium as long as you have cash. The small businesses all around the fairgrounds sell their parking
