Wow

Ice on roads, close schools
Icicles….. NO

this is why no one should care if their kids miss a day of school in LA

If you go with a delayed start, then I would suggest 10am as opposed to 8am.

I still say that school should be open.

Well guess what??

My school board member just told me that the reasoning is kids will be too cold waiting for the bus. NOT an ice issue.

So, there you go, sir Isaac Newton!!!!

Several issues at play

Several parishes have older school buildings that are harder to heat up and retain heat

Safety issue at school with ice patches and kids being generally dumb around it

Safety issues for student who have to stand and wait for a bus

Issue that some students come from poor parents and can't properly get warm enough clothes

Safety issue that Louisiana school buses are not equipped for cold weather. They don't have heaters, no seatbelts, sit high off the ground so any ice on the road from previous ice melting becomes and issue.

Safety issue of adults driving for some of those reasons

Schools have days built in for hurricane and weather in Louisiana. What they will do is change an early dismissal, teacher in-service, or "fun" day for students into a classroom day. It is better to err on the side of caution than to have something happen. Even if it inconveniences some individuals.

We’ve had 2 snow events in the last 9 least in south central LA. Both had accumulation and both were an absolute disaster for travel on any interstates. (In the immediate aftermath)

Was wrong. It was actually 2017.

The point was, this isn’t the first, nor the last time it will happen.

Let’s see how they deal with 100+ in 90% humidity.

I’ve seen those tough northern baws melt down in the heat

Busses pick up Rural students near me as early as 5:15 (perhaps earlier, but that’s the earliest that I know of).

It’s going to be a tad chilly at that time, so that seems to be a major factor in determining start times.

2017. I was throwing snowballs and running in the snow with my dog, I have a video of a decent amount of snow on the ground

What’s crazy is LSU didn’t cancel school that day despite snow on the ground. I had a final exam that morning after waking up early to see the snow

Honest question here....

Do today's busses have operable heat and air? I have asked both of my school aged boys and neither of them have an answer.

Schools used to wait till the morning of (anyone remember waking up early to watch the local news and hope your school scrolls across the bottom?) But adults complained it wasn't enough of a warning to find adequate care for their kids.

Now we announce the day before and sometimes it is bad (like this morning/last week) sometimes it changes and it becomes a nice day

My kids were in school then.

Some chic plowed into the back of their truck (ice).

It didn’t hurt the truck.

Her car had damage, but she was able to drive away with a messed up grill and a sizable dent in her hood.

Heat yes, although the bus itself is poorly insulated so it may not be the most effective, but the blower is behind about the fourth seat in the drivers side, always try to get that one
AC, most do not, however ascension just said they were going to retrofit all buses with AC

Nah it’s not but it’s still so infrequent that I doubt it will change any policy.

From what I can tell - including Minnesota - school boards make the decision based on the road conditions at the beginning and end of the day. The decision is usually all or mother for the entire district - if all their busses cannot drive safely, they’ll cancel for the entire district.

quote:

If roads are good, it is hard to justify closing school. Sometimes extreme cold weather may create a need to close. If it is so cold that we can’t get buses running or have a problem keeping buildings warm, we will probably not have school.

There can be different weather conditions in different parts of the district. The general procedure is that if all the buses can’t run, school will not be held. In towns where it is more protected, the weather may not appear to be as bad as it is in the country.

Please remember that we understand that the ultimate decision whether your child attends school during bad weather conditions rests with you, the parent. If you feel your child should not venture out in the weather, that is your decision and we can certainly agree with this.

If they do, they probably don’t have enough arse to keep up imho.

Busses are large spaces. Throw in opening and closing the door, and it’s a lot to ask.

Nonetheless, throw in some hot breath, and it will be a shitload warmer than outside.
