Who is, in your opinion, a guitarist who is/was very popular but on a technical level rather average or worse?

This would probably include some on my favorites, but they have the tone and I don't consider that technical, it's natural. You either have it or you don't.
Most of the best technically, don't have the tone that hits me.

Jimmy Page

...sloppy, but he's still fantastic in his own way.

Tom Morello and The Edge are two that immediately come to mind.

This again. I'll state an "OPINION" and somebody will argue you with me about how I'm wrong. More entertaining just to read others OPINIONS.
On second thought, I'll bite..... Ace Frehley. I'll leave it at that.

First and foremost, I really like AC/DC. Huge fan. Fun, foot stomping, good time having music.

That being said, Angus Young is one of the most overrated guitarist ever.

Billy Duffy from the Cult is pretty mediocre.

Another vote for this try-hard with his guitar hanging above his nipples.

Slash

Most serious guitarists don't (or shouldn't) rate Tom Morello, Edge, and Jack White that highly

“Jimmy Page is an excellent producer. Led Zeppelin and Led Zeppelin II are classics. As a player, he’s very good in the studio. But I never saw him play well live. He’s very sloppy. He plays like he’s got a broken hand and he’s two years old. But if you put out a good album and play like a two-year-old live, what’s the purpose?”
