Group of friends heading to KY in July. Flying into Louisville

Any must see distillery tours or ones to avoid?

Any of them allow you buy their high end allocated bottles? I know Buffalo Trace only lets you get the lower end bottles.

All the tours are pretty much the same. I would do a couple tours at your favorite distilleries and then do sampling at the others.

Makers Mark was my favorite. Old Forrester and Woodford Reserve were cool too.

Maker's Mark and Heaven Hill were great.

I would be sure to go to Michter's. From what I've heard you can usually pick up something decent from their gift shop. 10 year rye, 10 year bourbon, barrel strength rye, toasted rye, etc...

They also let you bottle your own rye on some days, but I'm not 100% on when that happens.

Check Old Carter's social media, they sometimes have random drops.

Have done the trail a few times now.

As tours go… Old Forester in Louisville is the best IMHO. Everything is nice and well organized with a tasting at the end.

Places to hit…

Neat - Wanna drink a 70+ year old Bourbon? Maybe take a vintage bottle home? This is the place.

Evergreen Liquors/Nulu - you’ll find the best prices on tough to get pours here. In Louisville; acts as a liquor store with a tasting room.

Willett - get a reservation for the restaurant in advance.

Other really good ones…

Buffalo Trace, Evan Williams Experience in Louisville, Michter’s, Heaven Hill, Beam (don’t sleep on this; the restaurant is great), Makers Mark, Bardstown Bourbon Co.

Ones I’d skip…

Four Roses (it’s small), Woodford (feels more like a Napa winery than a Kentucky distillery), Wild Turkey (they may have reopened recently), Barton.

In Louisville, Angel’s Envy and Evan Williams Experience. You get some great expensive pours at EWE and it’s their experimental lab. I wasn’t impressed with Michener’s. I recommend Black Rabbit for dinner in Louisville. If you are looking for Pappy, the bar in the Seelbach Hotel has a very reasonably priced poor and generally great selection.

For Lexington, definitely do Woodford Reserve just because it’s the prettiest distillery there. Beautiful countryside. I also strongly recommend Town Branch, not for the whiskey but because Lexington Brewery is there. You get some great beers on that tour and it’s interesting. Both Bulliett and Buffalo Trace are on way from Louisville to Lexington. Bulliett isn’t anything special but nice location with patio for good cocktails. You can get top bottles at Buffalo Trace but they run out of Eagle Rare early.

For Bardstown, definitely do Heaven Hill. Main Street is quaint and has a nice little bar where the locals hang out if you want to try your luck.

I haven’t found any to avoid yet…those we’ve enjoyed time at:
Wild Turkey
Woodford
Castle & Key (the Old Taylor Distillery grounds are gorgeous)
Maker’s Mark(best tour IMO, met Bill Samuels Jr. who hangs out often)
Heaven Hill—the new facility is top notch

Hard to go wrong anywhere, but I also 100% recommend Mint Julep Tours to take you from place to place

Castle and Key is a must.
Get in line around 7 for Buffalo Trace if you want bottle of Allocated Bourbon.
Wild Turkey is currently redoing their visitors center.
Makers Mark is amazing (grounds).
Bardstown as a town and the distilleries should be visited.

Great restaurants in Louisville and Lexington.

We have a group of friends headed there this fall as well. Would y’all fly into Lexington or Louisville? Or would y’all recommend to fly into one and out of the other? We definitely want to hit Buffalo Trace on our trip. TIA

Was coming here to say this. The grounds are in a proper "holler" and it's awesome what they have done with the place.

New Riff up across the river from Cincy is kind of a cool spot too.

Just went in October, this assessment is pretty spot on. The day we went to Michter’s, they didn’t drop any special bottles, but we got to bottle our own personalized bottle of Barrel Proof. They dropped M10B the next morning. Did have a great flight upstairs.

We had a special tour at BT because my buddy drew a Golden ticket for us to pick a barrel of Stagg. So, we had a private tour one notch above their Hard Hat tour. Scored a couple of bottles of Blanton’s each from the gift shop.

Surprisingly, Makers was the next best tour, the guy walking us through really knew his stuff and dipping a bottle was cool.

Underrated spot was the Troll Under the Bridge bar. Walked there from Old Forrester (which I loved) and watched Thursday Night football. Ran into an entire table full of guys from Baton Rouge in for a bachelor party for their Dad (that’s my age). We ended up having a blast finding out how many people we knew in common and several allocated pours at good prices.

And do NOT miss Neat!

We are going to fly into Louisville and stay there each night, probably rent an Airbnb

Will spend 1 whole day there doing tours and tasting

Then a day in Bardstown and a day in the Frankfurt area.
