I’ve seen the same thing since China virus. Dealers all are saying it will be years until they have pre-China virus inventory, if they ever do. Most don’t think it will ever get back to normal as we know it. This may very well be the new normal.

Maybe Ford is different, but I’ve been to some BMW dealerships that hardly had any cars on the lot. This is from Covid on. Asked for a loaner once and they practically laughed at me.
Sometimes that is by design. dealers might have few a few in the front, but they might have an auxiliary lot with rows and rows of cars waiting to be sold. Retail does this too, it is to put the idea of scarcity in the buyers mind to buy it now before it is gone.
Now BMW might not carry a lot of inventory to get you to order to your specification's instead of carrying a bunch of random inventory that may not fit a customer. They could have one or 2 of each model in various colors to show for perspective buyers. They then show off the cars. A buyer selects the model, trim, color, etc. The dealer gets a nice deposit from the customer and places the order with BMW and you get your car in a few months and secure financing or leasing terms at time of purchase.

Been hearing alot of this. Idk why they are even allowed to remote update on something like a vehicle. Ive heard problems with another manufacturer where the update was happening and would get interrupted for whatever reason and then the vehicle would now be screwed up. If they can access it remotely then more than likely someone with bad intentions can access it also.

OTA updates are mostly a good thing. They just frick up sometimes. Regarding the remote access, it’s been a thing for a long time. OnStar has been disabling vehicles by LEO request for over a decade now. It’s not exactly a new thing.

Coming to a vehicle near you once the government starts regulating your freedom of movement.
ETA: kind of forgot they already did that during Covid. Well… get ready for more of it. Why all these computers and software in cars is bullshite.

You would think the technology would now be such that they could download the update entirely before starting the programming to ensure that some kind of wifi hiccup wouldn't brick the vehicle.

It didn’t brick the entire vehicle, but an OTA update that went out earlier in the year screwed up a lot of sync 3 systems. Was a complete pain in the arse waiting on an update to repair the issue they created.

In the future, we'll have cars that you just get in and drive. Imagine the possibilities with all that freedom and not needing a software update and permission to use your vehicle.

That is what is already done.
The bigger issue is that ford and other manufacturers are antiquated in how vehicles are designed from a computer standpoint. Instead of there being one main component/computer that is updated as a whole system a la what your operating system does. Your vehicle has a ton of invidual modules that need to be updated separately which makes it more complicated than it needs to be and more error prone for a variety of reasons.
Ford does their updates in waves to minimize the number of people affected when an update causes issues. And for what it's worth, this isn't an issue limited to their EV models.

Yeah, if I'm just trying to get to work or whatever I am fundamentally uninterested in dealing with any of that kind of shite.

Just wait till daddy gubmint decides you’ve reached your carbon footprint totals for the year…

A family member works fairly high up at GM, said this is looking to be the norm going forward. Dealerships buy the cars from the dealer, with the prices and loan rates where they are the dealers are worried about getting screwed with a lot full of overpriced vehicles they can't get rid of without taking a loss.

Ford is building Blue Oval City just outside of Memphis.
Will be manufacturing electric vehicles.
Wonder what the odds are that they actually finish the factory. I imagine very low.
