Going to wait for some tax specialists to weigh in on the real value of this deal but it seems like the $700M number just isn’t the real value and it’s way lower. Of all people to be pissed, maybe it’s CA that has the most reasons to be pissed. $680M that will almost certainly be paid out elsewhere
ETA Ohtani is a unicorn and his off the field money is huge but this seems like such a dumb decision in general for most players. Like what if there is a catastrophic event that leads to the sport not existing 10 years from now lol. I’m curious how it would play out also if the dodgers ownership changed. New owners taking on $680M in debt essentially for a player not even around

the endorsement dollars slow down then maybe that's a benefit? Maybe??
He’ll turn 40, disappear into retirement, but then start getting the bulk of his original contract.

With inflation, that $680m is not going to be worth that 10 years from now….it’ll be worth less. This is an idiotic financial move on his part no matter how you slice it

He made 40 million in endorsements last year, topping every baseball player. They expect him to pick up a few more playing for a bigger franchise as well.

That's why I said it's a great move for the team.
Quite possible/likely that $680 million is worth about $340million in todays dollars ten years from now.

That is terrible for him financially.
How do you figure?

Well let’s say he makes $70 next year, 10% gains ultra ultra conservative, 77, now do that over 10 years and yeah he is leaving so much money on the table.

Ohtani with $70M and an entire country behind him, I am confident he can turn that into an absolute ton. But again the guy has a ton so unless he is trying to own Amazon one day he is fine

for (luxury) tax purposes is a 10 year 460mm deal
this is the only part I care about and I don't understand how MLB can allow it.
They are saying yeah you are paying him $700 million to pay baseball but since you are paying it in 20 years and it'll be worth less, you only pay luxury tax on 460million.
By the dodgers not having to pay that 700 million today, they can invest it as well. if anything charge them the luxury tax value of 70 million + interest

If the Dodgers are smart they will invest what the owe him, preferably not with Bernie Madoff and they will make money
