Without judgment—why or how is your son in his last semester of college (so presumably 21-23 years old) and never driven a car before?

Unless you mean first car that he owns himself?

Has had that since before he started college, but hasn't needed a vehicle until now. He's an accounting major and will be getting married in May while continuing on for his masters and CPA designation. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Cargurus. Let's you search with a good amount of restrictions and nationwide. If you find something you like, use a third party pre-purchase inspection company like Lemon Squad to inspect it before purchase. Depending from where it's shipped, it will usually run you anywhere from $500 to $1000

If you want him to be an OT baller, a 4x4 F250 dually with a 4 inch lift rolling on 42s. Obvious truck nuts. White for blue collar baws, forest green for outdoorsmen and blue/silver/gray for city slickers.

Stay away from cheap Hyundai and Kias right now, there simply are not any motors available to fix cars with bad motors... and they have a motor problem... There is a reason they have gotten so cheap.

Take heed of this warning. It may all be anecdotal but there is a HEAP of chatter about it. Usually where there is that much smoke something is on fire.

KIA/Hyundais are also basically throw aways. Simply things like replacing an alternator can cost a couple of thousand dollars. This is well documented. They have an excellent reputation for reliability, until recently, but the repair costs have always been far higher than any other brand. We had a KIA Sportage (2014) and when the alternator failed the service manual called for the engine to be removed from the vehicle. I managed to replace it by removing one motor mount and jacking the engine up on one side but it was close and unless you are a shade tree mechanic would cost a couple of thousand dollars. Sister had a KIA Mini Van with 110K on it that needed a timing belt. KIA wanted $13K to replace the engine. The belt was not broken, engine was fine, just running rough. It would cost $1500 in most cars. We did it for about $1000 BUT it took 4 - 3 day weekends. Son had an Accent with a rear wheel bearing problem. KIA wanted $1800 to replace it. I did it for $85 but it required draining and removing the fuel tank so the old bearing and swing arm could be cut out from under the vehicle with a torch....in most cars it would cost about $500. They are great until they need something done to them and then good luck.

He's starting an internship job in January for his last semester of college and will need a reliable first car that hopefully doesn't cost an arm and a leg which I know is the proverbial needle in a haystack at this point. Any recommendations appreciated and willing to travel far and wide for a good deal. Have personally preferred Toyotas in the past, but am currently leaning toward possible Hyundai and Kia values these days.

Im a cheap bastard and looked for a gas sipping commuter that was reliable and affordable. Planned on buying a Corolla or Accord but both were way expensive for what I was looking for. Considered Hyundai/KIA but shied away due to chatter about engine issues. Never considered Nissan because of well documented transmission problems. Looking for alternatives I kept finding Mitsubishi Mirages. Incredible safety ratings and reliability reports and...most importantly for me and my cheap arse, very low resell value. Curious as to why this was and convinced it was a reliability issue what I found was the basic, simple design of the car just is not in keeping with others in its class. It has a 3 cylinder 78 HP engine. It is not a speed demon...that was the biggest complaint I could find. SO I looked for vehicles with more than 200K on them for sell nation waide and, when compared to total number sold in the US, the Mirage beat everything on the road...more 200K mile vehicles still running on the road, or at least for sell, than any other when compared to the number sold. SO I decided to drive one....it was slow. Not dangerously slow but slow. What was attractive was it was a 2023 model with less than 7000 miles on it with a clean carfax and the remaining 100K warranty intact. We paid $15K for that car out the door. I have put about 3000 miles on it and it averages 43 MPG. Have been on one trip of 250 miles in it and it is plenty comfortable for 2 adults and a 13 year old. The drivetrain has been used for about 50 years around the world without significant problems and minor changes (fuel injection, electronic ignition). It ain't sexy, does not have a lot of bells and whistles but it gets from point A to B at 43 MPG and cost us $15k with 7000 miles on it. Worth at least some thought....

Maybe he goes to college in a reasonably large and walkable town with public transportation? My kid is a sophomore and hasn’t needed one yet.

Works on campus and uses campus transit bus trips to get needed dorm items, etc. Paid for most of his tuition/room & board with his work and academic scholarship. Will graduate in May owing nothing for tuition.

thats perfect for his needs and he will like the 30 mpg too.

a Honda Ridgeline should help ensure he attracts an educated woman that is capable of thinking for herself and is not just a puppet.
