Cousin Wedding Laws by State

I read a crazy story about a couple who got married, not realizing they were first cousins (adoption was invloved), and were quickly divorced. That got me thinking about state laws, so I decided to Google the laws. I was actually shocked to discover how many states allow it, which brings me to the following question:

Do you know anyone who are either married to their cousin or accidentally married a cousin and got divorced?

I don't know anyone for sure, but I suspect a few!!!!

Thanks in advance!

The dateline a couple weeks ago was about a car dealer in Baton Rouge. He was from Iran and married his first cousin. He brought it all the way up to the Supreme Court that she shouldn’t get anything since LA doesn’t recognize 1st cousins ability to marry.

He lost the case and murdered her

This is why it's important to know the difference between your second cousin and first cousin, once removed. Most folks think, incorrectly, the latter is the former.

States where first-cousin marriages are not allowed
Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

No. At least not for a few generations.

But, when I worked in psychiatrist residential at a children’s group home we had a kid that was from around Hazard that was born of siblings. And his parents were also born from siblings. Pretty sure that family tree went straight up for awhile.
It was incredibly sad as he looked like the kid out of Deliverance and functioned on a 3rd grade level at the age of 12.

My parents have a great great grandmother in common. Or maybe great great great.

NGL IWHH my first cousin in her early twenties. She was a smokeshow. Then she got married, had kids and became morbidly obese.

Pretty much 100% of the world’s population has someone in their family tree and that’s usually within the last few generations.

This is worldwide and appears to be from 1999

It says nothing about your brother or sister which is still legit in Tennessee today.

I mean, I know we all laugh about it but scientifically there is negligible risk from cousin marriage and it was the norm in most of the world for most of human existence.

Everyone was related somehow

There were 2 sets of first cousins in my wife's family that married back in the 1800's. Which explains a lot of lingering questions!
However, back in the day, families living remotely in the country didn't have a whole lot to choose from.

Yes, I know of two first cousins that got married back home in Harlan County. They grew up telling everybody they were first cousins at least. The boy was my hunting buddy growing up. The girl's mama didn't raise her and they had different last names. The girls Mamaw raised her. I think that's the technicality they justified it with, pardon the pun.

They're both Holiness Pentecostals (snake handling church), I'm guessing their sect allows it because they're both active in church and have been married for years.

It is accepted that almost everyone of European ancestry has a common ancestor within the past 600 to 1000 years, so most of us are cousins to some degree.

I had 29 first cousins and a greater number of second and other degrees. Dozens of cheerleaders and school beauties. Family gatherings, weddings and even funerals with 100+ teenagers was roughly akin to speed dating.
