How would you go about this? He’s kinda small built and wants to get first “real rifle”.
Do I let him shoot crossed over? Or start now shooting lefty?
I’m a lefty BTW and all my rifles are left handed except one bolt gun.

He should shoot lefty.

That’s me…
For rifles and shotguns as a young man I did well with lever actions, pump actions and automatics. Shooting them as a lefty. You can’t train them to use the right eye; don’t even try.
I did occasionally use a right handed Model 7 as a deer gun. Reloading required lowering the gun entirely between shots. Not ideal…. Eventually; I made the switch to left hand bolt actions and was much happier.
For long guns and archery he’s gonna be a southpaw for all intents and purposes. He’s all set if you have some LH actions.
Where things sometimes get wacky is with handguns. Odds are he’ll want to hold it in his right hand and use his left eye.

My son shoots this way. He does everything right handed but is left eye dominant. He shoots left handed and kills several deer a year.

thats easy, just get him an eye patch and make him wear it for 2 weeks straight and he wont be left dominant any more.
also, his right eye may have an issue and need glasses. thats what usually causes this.

I am the same way and when I was a kid I just made myself learn how to close my left eye. I wasn’t comfortable shooting left handed but I did not try it for long so maybe I could’ve gotten used to it at some point.

Teach him to shoot w both eyes open.
A temporary eye patch will help the transition.
I have the same story. Right handed left eye dominant.
Thank goodness I had an uncle who was a very experienced shooter.
Worked with me from a young age, starting w BB guns, to shoot both eyes open.
The alternatives, shooting left handed or crossing over are very bad and will impact him for the rest of his life.

I am the same way. Never really found it an issue with a rifle you just learn to cycle the bolt with your right hand.

I had this same issue as a kid, I couldn’t hit spit with my BB gun. My old grandfather was the same and knew the cure, he tested me then had me switch to left handed shooting.
Been doing it all my life now, it especially helps wing shooting and with a bow.

My son is same way. We put a patch on him while shooting bb gun for a while and he learned to close left eye well enough he shoots right handed fine now.

I'm a lefty and shoot right handed because I don't feel like having to buy left handed guns and shite
Make him shoot right handed
Make him shoot right handed

That's the reason I am left eye dominant. Had a lazy right eye as a child. Treatment was medicated eye drops of some kind and a patch on my good eye for a month or two. Right eye is still astigmatic, left eye is nominally far-sighted. I still suck it up and shoot right handed, right eyed for rifles and shotguns but for pistols I use right hand left eye.
Considering the switch, but it feels like writing with the wrong hand.

I'm same. Can shoot right handed well. But. Have to definitely use LH bow.

I am a firearms instructor. I run across this quite often. All I can tell you is that I have never, ever, seen someone who is left eye dominant, even if they were right handed all of their life, shoot better right handed or with non-dominant eye. I have people argue with me about it all the time till I get them to shoot with their dominant eye and see for themselves it is better.
Do your son a favor and start him shooting with his dominant eye. He will be better for it.

I’m right handed, left eye dominant, and it was always natural/comfortable for me to hold a rifle, bow, and shoot left-handed from the first time it picked one - which would have been a BB gun pre-teen.
In fact, I was in my late teens when a friend pointed out to me/asked why I shot left handed when they knew I was right handed - up until that time I hadn’t a clue. My father, who taught me how to hunt/shoot at a much earlier age, never commented on this. Seems strange in hind-sight.

I’m R handed,L eye dominant.I always shot R handed with L eye closed.I’ve always been pretty good shot,( boot camp I shot # 4 out of 260 guys during qualification)
But I’ve always read that it’s better to shoot side one’s eye is dominant. When I started my wife hunting I started her shooting L handed as she is L eye dominant. She is a very good shot. She shoots Marlin 30-30.
I tried to swap over,it was very awkward because I had been shooting R handed so many years by the time I learned about all that.

I’m right handed as is my 16 yr old son but left eye dominant. We shoot shotguns and rifles left handed. I tried to do the patch over the left eye but it didn’t work out. Ruger makes several left handed rifles. Get him an American or predator lefty.

I’m right handed and left eye dominant. Have always shot left handed. I can shoot righty in a pinch but much prefer left handed at this point. My shotgun is left handed, which is nice so it isn’t throwing shells across my face. My rifle is righty and has never bothered me.
