I don't know why you're including Orgeron's buyout, that is separate and already budgeted. Regardless of that, no the athletic department isn't drowning in money, but I don't think the numbers you are talking about are anything to make them balk at the decision.

I'm not going to pretend to know the inner workings of the department budget, but the new SEC TV contract with ESPN is kicking in soon which would provide substantially more money per year. I've seen projections saying each team should receive $20m more annually from the SEC than they did previously. Obviously there are other athletic projects that need to be done for other sports, but I'm sure they can throw a few million of that per year at football coaches payouts if deemed necessary. The last athletic budget reporting, which accounted for firing Orgeron, had around a $6.5m surplus with $4.5m of that going back to the university.

Then you have to buy out your new staff from its current job (unless contract language allows for them to leave in getting a promotion).
it's extremely rare for coaches to have to pay the school to leave these days

Either they have no language or the payout to the school is minimal.

For instance, BKs buyout to LSU is $2m a year vs his $9m salary. And that's completely canceled if Woodward is no longer the AD

And defense asst should be minimal

I updated...just don't want people thinking you have to pay a full salary to get someone.

Steeples contract for leaving for another job...for comparison

When the money guys tell you to go get Jimbo. Let them pay the money, watch the mess up.

I ment more of the UDub job and the job being done at LSU. aTm will continue as long as the money guys keep getting involved.

What he did was buy the only title winning coach who was available on the market. Before that point, all A&M had was big talk and cash. It was the first time they actually took that money and made a splash with it.

I know it didn’t work out. Jimbo decided to get stubborn right when college football was shifting. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a smart calculated risk. Let’s roll back the clock a few years. We made Nick Saban a top 10 paid coach when he had never done more than beat Michigan, Penn St, and go to a couple of bowl games at Michigan St. We overpaid big time based on potential and because we were down at the time. We had to overpay to get him. A&M was in the same boat with Jimbo.

After O’s last two years, a big contract with plenty of security was also the only way to land an established coach better than Stoops here. Did you miss the cold shoulder he got from the A&M fanbase?

speaking of O
quote:

"Coach O has set a new standard at LSU," athletic director Scott Woodward said in a statement. "He has proven that he is not only a championship coach, but also a leader of a program committed to doing things the right way. He has represented our institution and our state with great pride, on and off the field of play. He is well-deserving of this new contract, which should make clear our commitment to Coach O and the direction of our football program."
how smart was it of Woodward to overpay for a guy absolutely no one else wanted, and who would never have left even if someone did?

yeah keep paying a championship coach 3 mill and he absolutely will stay loyal.

O never quit on LSU in his life. Besides when he literally quit the team.

hope you're not trying to say Woody is a responsible AD because that would be unreal...look at the buyouts he's agreed to...jimbo included

I think Matt House stays and they change position coaches. People will throw big tantrums over this.

As they should. He can't recruit and he can't coach.

My biggest gripe about this defensive staff is when they were in position they couldn’t tackle and the biggest gripe is they were rarely in position to even make the tackle. Then there is this “we are learning how to use Harold Perkins” wtf. He has been on the field for 2 years now. And then there is the let’s drop him into coverage constantly which is what they did against FSU and vs Ole Miss which is exactly everyone hopes we do. There was any point that this staff recognized that to protect an awful pass defense you bring more people than they can block on a consistent basis. This is why this staff has to go. They showed no ability to make any real changes.

Good god, our fanbase simultaneously bitches about spending too much money (House) and same breath says "pay that man what he wants" (ERob). Just using the 2 examples off the top of my head but it's easily more than that. All the while bitching that we dont have money (losing recruits to other schools).

pay him 6 mill with a $20 mill buyout and he won't give a shite what happens

you keep blaming everyone but the guy who actually signed the contracts representing the LSU Athletic Dept

Woodward has fricked yall over repeatedly, and you will end up paying as much as TAMU did (also his fault) to undo his latest mistake
