Security footage captured an unusual attack this week by a black bear that ambled through an Aspen hotel kitchen and then took a swipe at a guard, knocking him to the floor.
The attack occurred late Monday night at the St. Regis Aspen Resort in the Colorado ski town. The footage shows a black bear wandering by a prep table in an empty kitchen, then swinging back to where it had entered. The security guard, whom Colorado Parks and Wildlife Department did not identify, then is seen walking into the kitchen, tracing the route the bear had just walked.
The guard was investigating reports of bear activity in the building, according to CPW. When he turned into a room off the kitchen and found the bear, the two surprised each other. The bear appeared to rear up on its hind legs, then took a couple of swipes as the guard turned away and fell to the ground.
The bear scurried off after the attack. The guard escaped to safety and called 911.
They spotted the bear near the hotel on Tuesday but weren’t able to safely tranquilize it.
CPW officers saw the bear again near Conner Park in Aspen in the early morning hours of Wednesday. They treed the bear, then immobilized it with a tranquilizer gun at about 2 a.m.
Consistent with agency policy for dangerous bears, CPW euthanized the bear and sent its body to Fort Collins for a necropsy.

That bear was scared and ran away and yet they still wanted it dead? In a few weeks dude would have gone into hibernation. Sad.

That bear was on two legs swinging like a boxer.
Damn nature, you scary.

You don't want one that is comfortable breaking in to buildings.
I have a big fat frick that keeps trying to get in my garbage. I can't shoot it, but he does get an air horn and blasted with rock salt when I see him.

Thankfully black bears are smaller and usually pussies. If that was a grizzly he would have been extra fricked.

Was that bear wearing a tie?

Was it a repeat offender?

Agree. And typical. Humans are the worst species. I’m really surprised there aren’t a lot of bear attacks in Gburg with all of the stupid people harassing those bears.

Its a high end resort town so they will take zero risk. Also, Colorado is freaking covered up with black bear and killing one won't matter. I know a sheep rancher on the western sloe who killed over 300 black bear on his property a few years ago. They are a nuisance.

As someone who has personally fought off multiple black bears….that black bear is BIG.

That would be my guess. I know that is the policy in Louisiana or at least it was. Relocation except for repeat offenders.

Yeah, its a freaking infestation of them up there. We went on vacation a couple of summers ago and had to be careful everytime we stepped out of the condo. They would just be chillin on the porch.

If it would’ve been a white bear, they’d let it live
