Gritty or cities with edge

In your opinion, what are some cities or towns that have some grit or edge to them?
By way of example:
New Orleans, Detroit and Savannah would be touristy cities that I’d consider are gritty. Charleston, Charlotte, and Denver wouldn’t.

Dayton, Ohio and Buffalo, NY look like hepatitis.
In my experience, Camden, NJ takes the cake for “grit”
Providence, RI is a city with some grit around the edges that is actually worth visiting. Italian food options on federal hill are off the charts.

I don’t feel like Savannah is gritty at all, especially compared to the other two you listed.

Then you've only seen a small part of Savannah

Savannah, Charleston and New Orleans are the three main “cultural” cities in the Southeast, in my opinion. They’re pretty similar in architecture and emphasis on food and drink. Savannah much more resembles NOLA in terms of its divey-ness than Charleston.

Gary, Indiana
Not really a tourist spot.
Another example, I’d consider Memphis and St Louis to be gritty as opposed to Orlando and Salt Lake.

Los Angeles and San Francisco probably deserve to be on here based on your criteria

Pittsburgh is pretty gritty in the winter

I once had a driver to the airport, who had grown up in the ghetto of Newark, NJ, tell me that the only time he was really scared of driving anywhere in an inner city happened to be in Camden.

Tulum, Mexico
When you get away from the beach, it is very grungy. But I liked that aspect of it. Felt like I actually went to Mexico.

I moved to Winston-Salem 13 years ago. I often describe it as gritty. It’s real. I’ve lived in Greenville, SC and Asheville, NC and like Winston-Salem better. It’s not contrived like the other two.

Centro is awesome and, yes, agree with what someone said about the beach road
