New Orleans, Detroit and Savannah would be touristy cities that I’d consider are gritty. Charleston,

In the last calendar year, I have vacationed in all three.

Gritty as frick:
New Orleans

Not Gritty:

I don't think there are many cities that answer this question as well as Bangkok.

I thought it was pretty cool.

I find Milwaukee to be a generally ugly city, with a pretty cool vibe... I have enjoyed my brief stays there..

You can say that for most all s. American,, Caribbean and Mexican resort areas. Get outside of the bubble and it is pretty bleak.

New York is not gritty? How does this topic not begin and end with NYC?

Philadelphia and Baltimore are gritty, and get their fair share of tourists.

I lived there. What’s gritty about it?

If you think MKE is ugly now, you should have seen it two decades ago. Seriously, though, it's actually a very nice city after the redevelopment projects - Bay View, Lower East Side and Third Ward are all fantastic neighborhoods. Going to be SO different if plans for removing 794 go through.

Milwaukee still has a gritty culture, but I wouldn't call the city "ugly" these days, especially with its development along the lake and river.

I vacationed there a few months before the hurricane hit. I only saw one crack head.

Spokane, WA.

A conservative city that is bound by Seattle politics. The winters start early and end late. Not a lot of industry, though it’s grown the past few years. The largest city between Seattle and Minneapolis (1,600 miles on I90/94, aka not shite else around.)

It has a metro of about 500k, but it feels very isolated during the long, cold winter.

Not really a tourist spot.

Not at all. But the sand dune beaches nearby are pretty cool.
