Like most others are saying...great TVs as far as quality goes, but the UI is dog shite. I also have to reboot mine often due to internet connectivity issues as well as the android interface not working.

UI things got better in recent generations. I have an X90L and there are no issues with the UI and no need to reboot. Putting Google TV into "apps only" mode makes it a highly enjoyable experience. Very simple and fluid.

I don't hook up wifi as I don't want the smart tv functions. I just plug in Roku for those.

Some of the absolute best TVs are Sony, but they are also among the most expensive and the worst value proposition.

I think they said to hell with the low-end market. Samsung, LG, etc will sell you a TV at every price/performance point.

Sony seems to sell only top shelf stuff. They're kind a like that with their phones too. I kinda respect it.

Full disclosure: I mostly by the value or midrange models, so I do not have a Sony.

No, they have multiple low end led models.... The x85, x80 and x77. I'd never consider any of these.

X90 is mid tier and x93 is high end led.

Low end OLED doesn't exist, so they have the 95 model that's crazy expensive and the a80 model that's priced mid to high range.

I bought a 36" in 2010 and it is still like new but obviously is not a smart tv. Paid $500 back then. For reliability I'd buy another one but IMHO the price is too steep.

TV has a great picture.

Computer side of it is horrible.
Have to unplug for 10 seconds to empty the cache or it will not work right.
If you need the technology part, run away from it.
If you really are more concerned with a great picture it has a great picture.

Just get a hisense or tcl

if you get a tcl yo actually want an older model like a 2021. They ruined the newer models.

And I really dont find the sonys overpriced because they have 65" tcls, pioneers, amazons, and lgs all at the same
$599 price point.

You’re the person to ask then. It’s been a few years since I was in the tv market myself, and my parents just asked me to start researching TV’s because they’d like to replace their buggy Samsung.

After doing some brief research yesterday I’ve come across a few models so far in the sort of range they’re looking at. The Sony x90l, the Hisense h7k/h8k and the tcl qm8. On paper, and some of the reviews, I’ve seen the Hisense and tcl models are comparable, if not slightly better in some aspects compared to the Sony. My biggest concern for the Sony are the black levels? Does the light from scenes bleed into the letterbox black bars noticeably while watching content? their current Samsung tv is horrible with basically washing out all colors with the backlight, terrible black levels. How noticeable is the blooming on the Sony?

I have a feeling they’ll be leaning more towards the Sony when I present them with the options given their familiarity with the brand compared to tcl or Hisense.

There is give and take with all these TVs. None of them are perfect. There are some direct comparison reviews on HDTVtest and FOMO on youtube if you want to check them out.

If you want a short summary, the X90L is overall the better TV compared to TCL and Hisense. Both TCL and Hisense have terrible motion processing. The X90L ha better upscaling. The X90L maintains all details so you dont miss anything from black crush. The color out of the box is absolutely better than the other two. The other two will need professional calibration if you want to get the best color performance from the sets (but they do get really good color performance after calibration).

The TCL and Hisense will have a bit better blacks but you will lose detail, especially in dolby vision with those two sets. They have a bit better blooming control than the Sony but again, it is because they are willing to sacrifice details in the name of blacks.

Vincent at HDTVtest gave the X90L a full recommendation for buyers and says the processing is so great that blooming is controlled amazingly well for being FALD and not mini-led. The blooming is only there if you go out of your way to look for it. There is a lot of haloing that people see and will think that is blooming but it isn't. It is just so bright your eyes will produce a halo effect.

EDIT: and if you can get a sony from costco, do it. The costco version (X90CL) comes with a backlit remote and it is fantastic. If you are going to use a streaming device then it probably doesn't matter.

I think the digital trends guy said he'd take the x90l over the hisense and tcl as well.

My guess is the hisense and tcl will outshine the Sony x90l with any decent quality 4k source material (even streaming services), but the Sony will outperform on anything 1080p, including broadcast sports. Just depends what you prioritize.

Yeah I actually just watched that digital trends comparison vid earlier today, the one between the tcl qm8 & the Hisense u8k, and he was basically raving about both of them, with mostly superficial differences setting them apart. So that wasn’t particularly helpful in making a decision between the two, and then at the end he just tossed in that he’d still probably go with the Sony x90l...which wasn’t even part of the comparison I do like his reviews though.

This is good to know, because the majority of their viewing habits are live sports, Fox News 24/7 fml and some movies here and there. I don’t even think the Netflix package they pay for is the one with UHD content. So it sounds like the Sony’s industry leading processing & upscaling abilities would be the most beneficial for the content they watch.

I’m also wondering if I should try and talk them in to spending a few hundred more, and going for LG’s entry level Oled in the B3. My main tv is the lg c7 oled I bought back in 2017, and other than missing some apps & some vertical banding issues, I’ve been really pleased with it. I know the knock on the b3 is that it isn’t as bright as the C series models and up, and has a processor that isn’t quite as powerful, but surely a 2023 B3 is better equipped than my 2017 C7, and if that’s the case I’d know they’d be more than happy with it.

There’s just too many damn options.

I have the 85" Sony X90L that I bought from Costco in 2020 and love it. It run Android TV so the UI works great imo. My living room has a vaulted ceiling with a ton of light and before I covered the high windows with solar screens, it was hard to see dark scenes at times. I bought a 55" of the same model for the bedroom and it is also great.

I paid $1899 for the 85" during a Black Friday sale.

No. OLED for people who dont care just doesn't make any sense. They do have burn-in/degradation issues still. Great picture but they are not set-it-and-forget-it products.

Love my Sony Bravia’s. Have the same problems with the UI and needing hard restarts every 3-6 months.

Also, I’ve been disappointed with the sound. I’ve been on the fence to buying a sound bar. Frustrating that such an expensive tv warrants another purchase of the sound bar.

The TVs are designed to be thin and maximize the picture quality. There is hardly a TV made today that doesn't need auxiliary speakers of some kind should you care at all about sound.

But if I don’t connect wi-fi and go dumb tv route, it should be fine otherwise? Looking at one for $600 at Best Buy for a second room.
