That is fricking horrifying.

But let’s keep piling standardized testing onto them. That’ll get them excited to learn!

I’ve been saying it, but the bar has been lowered to ground level, and about half of these kids refuse to even pick their foot up and step over it.

About 40% of the country’s high school seniors met none of the college readiness benchmarks for English, math, reading or science

This is probably about right.

Making the dumbass whose report card reads “FFFFFFD” take these tests means that you will see “ABBACADABA” the whole way down the booklet.

This isn’t good. This implies there are more of these.

Where are kids like this going to work?

From what I can tell, I think the kids need more time to take the ACT...my guess is a large majority don't finish 2-3 sections and have to guess on a bunch of the questions.

I wish people in hs and college that were granted more time on everything because of some ailment, all had an asterisk on their records. Saying this dude takes twice as long to finish assignments.

These results would indicate an increase in the number of kids who speak English as a second language.

When I graduated high school (33 years ago) the National average was like 19 and it was 17 or 18 for Louisiana It doesn’t look like the numbers have changed much to me
Isn’t the test easier now?

Average scores in math, reading and science were all below college readiness benchmarks, the nonprofit reported Tuesday.

Average students shouldn’t be going to college

Not only that, there was a scoring adjustment around a decade ago to make scores look better.

We've proven that throwing more money at the problem is not the answer.

Absolutely.

It is not a money issue. It is a flaw in the system itself. The US education system is fundamentally broken.

Yikes…

I scored a 25 the first time I took the ACT, and not only did I not study for it, but I also forgot my calculator.

Kids who have a stable home environment and educated parents are probably smarter now than they were 30 years ago under the same circumstances.

Here’s the issue: Just like in Idiocracy, the unemployed and low life types keep having kids because they get money from the government when they do. There are a higher ratio of these kids than there were 30 years ago. And we can complain all we want about education, which does have its own set of problems, but these kids are a product of their environment and lack the motivation to be successful in school. There’s no consequence for this, so they get away with ridiculous behavior and it has a negative effect on learning.

There’s multiple layers to all of this and it won’t get better unless we create alternative options for those who aren’t willing to learn in the classroom.

ACT scores and success in college have no correlation. Study after study show this. I’ll hire someone with a mid range gpa and extracurriculars over a high ACT SAT anyday.
