Scores on the ACT college admissions test fell to a 30-year low in 2023.

The average composite score on the exam fell 0.3 points to 19.5 compared with 19.8 last year, according to the nonprofit group that administers the exam. The top score is 36.
quote:

Average scores in math, reading and science were all below college readiness benchmarks, the nonprofit reported Tuesday.

About 40% of the country’s high school seniors met none of the college readiness benchmarks for English, math, reading or science, and 70% fell short of meeting the benchmarks for math. Roughly 1.4 million students took the ACT this year in all 50 states.
quote:

The 2023 graduating class was in its first year of high school when the COVID-19 pandemic began. The ACT noted that the decline in college readiness benchmarks correlated with the so-called COVID cohort, with just 21% of students meeting all four readiness benchmarks in English, math, reading and science and 43% meeting none of them.

That is fricking horrifying.

How much of this is due to schools requiring everyone to take these tests even if they have no business going to college?

If you look at test scores for some states, you will find that one of the SAT and the ACT will be much higher than the other there. This is because the people taking those tests tend to be ones who actually want to take those tests due to needing them for a certain school.

Making the dumbass whose report card reads “FFFFFFD” take these tests means that you will see “ABBACADABA” the whole way down the booklet.

It was the sixth consecutive year of ACT score declines

Sounds like it is a trend that has nothing to do with COVID

Even if that happens to be the case, this implies that 40% of all students fit that category and 70% of all students fit that category in math.

That is just as damning and doesn’t make it look any better.

When I graduated high school (33 years ago) the National average was like 19 and it was 17 or 18 for Louisiana

It doesn’t look like the numbers have changed much to me

Well if that has been the case already for decades, and it is, how does that take away from the point that the scores are lower than they have been in 30 years?

Wasn't there some talk of dumbing down the tests to boost scores?

Years ago, people would get held back if they couldn’t cut it.

No Child Left Behind and its successor plan now make it damn near impossible to hold a kid back unless the parents demand it. Which is why you have schools in places like Baltimore where a kid with a 0.4 GPA is at the top of his class.

The national average was around 19.8 in 1991 according to past data.

In 2007, it peaked at around 21.2.

So it was 19.8 in 1991 and 19.5 now?

Thats literally the same.

Are kids dumber now because the test is easier?

Butts in seat = money.

Its the smarter kids who are being punished. Most resources go dealing with children who's parents don't value education.

They drugged a generation for $$$ and better behavior, they care only about their system.

Nah the dumbass generations come in waves. The dumbasses who were scoring 19 in 1991 had kids who are scoring 19 in 2023

The generations in between straddling those are superior

If you look at the graph of test scores over the years, you’ll note that it hasn’t been a gradual decline.

It is on a serious negative trajectory.

Reading, science, and English remained relatively stable, with Math showing improvement over the last few decades.

Now, they are all tanking.
