There is a lot of reasons the defense is bad this year. But make no mistake some of it is Matt House's scheme and play calling. The insistence for playing the DBs 10-12 yds off the ball is one of the examples. The biggest thing I hope to see is our ability to rush the passer and get off blocks.

The coverage and players are what they are at this point. But the Dline should be able to get off blocks and create a pass rush with the talent we have. Goal is to just keep opponents at 30 or less and force a few turnovers to give the ball to our offense and let them score.

My opinion is that a good DC would have at least a middle tier defense with the talent we have. It is not a fair expectation for them to be a "good" defense with a lack of CBs and true pass rushers.

But the current performance? This defense is the worst defense in the Power 5. No one on this board would seriously argue that we have less talent on D than every school in the Power 5. They are massively underperforming. House should go.

I agree with this. Having a lackluster D with the players he has makes sense. But I don't know how you could ever exonerate him for having the worst defense in P5. There is no way we literally have the worst defensive pieces in all of cfb. Some, if not most of the blame has to go on House.

Just because you don't see them don't mean they aren't happening. LSU started off the game against Mizz in man. Got torched and started playing more Cover 4 and mixed coverages.

So everyone can defend it by saying “we don’t have the players for Man” but obviously we don’t have the players for zone either.

Again we gave up 22 points in 3 series running man coverage. Adjusted to zone and played alot better. Just because you "feel" something doesn't make it remotely right.

Our talent level on defense is not 130th in the country.

He's fine. Doesn't have the talent this year in the secondary to be better.
yes, the secondary talent is bad, but who's responsible for that?

Also, any decent coach can have an effective defense with great players. The true mark of a coach is what you can do with lesser talent.

Good coaches can assess the strengths and weaknesses of their players and scheme accordingly.

And I'm not expecting us to be an elite defense. But we're truly one of the very worst in the country. I expect more from a guy making millions.

Matt house mentor is Steve spagnuola the same former saints defense coordinator that allowed 7000 yards in 2012 the most yards in nfl history

Why this does fall on house, can we talk about how horrible our DB coaches are? Steeples and Cooks don’t teach making plays on the ball. There’s been at least 10 times this season where a ball is dumped over our receiver for a crazy gain, when if they just turn around they can make an INT. Just don’t have dawgs anymore. Need an alpha on Defense to step up

He's terrible... last year he called a couple decent games from start to finish but thats about it. It seems like he gives up an opening drive TD EVERY GAME and puts us in hole to climb out.

I think that’s a little bit of a disingenuous way to look at it. Buffalo is #122 in total defense. LSU’s defense would not be ranked lower than Buffalo if we played a MAC schedule.

The defense is bad, don’t get me wrong. But they aren’t worse than 120+ FBS teams.

Middle of the road DC in the SEC.

I think he knows and teaches very sound and safe principles but would prefer someone more aggressive even if the concepts are more basic. I would rather the talent be the star of the defense than the scheme.

Not high on his play calling but I think it's more of a problem with his scheme.

Ok, we're dead last in the SEC. Do you think the talent level is less than Vanderbilt? Id say the talent level is probably top 5 in the SEC and the production is last.

So the excuse has been that the players aren’t picking it up and when we dumb it down teams take advantage and get us into bad matchups. He can’t seem to find the middle ground where players can get lined up correctly, make a pre snap adjustment if necessary and go play. He’s just not a major college DC.

Depends on if he’s in charge of his staff or not. If he’s the one letting his coaches suck it up on the recruiting trail, then he’s not a long term option.

I like him being the brains though.

Could hardly believe my eyes with the loafing and scooching vs OM. Hard for me to blame the DC for that.

Maybe that's the ticket but we had a lot blown coverage vs Arky and OM.

we played better at the end, but you can watch plays where we’re clearly in zone on the early TD drives.
