Never dealt with a grizzly, but saw two baby black bears on a trail I was hiking when I lived in NH. Scout leader backed us up and we ended the hike right there, now I'm older I realize two baby black bears means mama was somewhere close and extremely pissed off.

You would be surprised by their reach and honestly, they would likely outsmart you at one point, and it really only takes one. You would be better off trying to get to covered location they could not get or reach into. Of course, with my luck, I would pick a rattlesnake den.

My wife talks so much there’s no chance a bear would stay within 10 miles of us hiking.

I think the solution, if there is one, is finding a deterrent odor we can wear. Bears have incredibly sensitive noses, which is why bear spray is so irritating to them, but they need to be close to use and even then sometimes it isn't effective enough. Just think if there was a way to keep a bear from even wanting to be within 100 yards of you, there were be less confrontations.
As for running down hill, they may not be good at it, but they are likely better than me, or alternatively, they could wait until I came to a rest after falling and rolling all the way and take what they wanted.

Wise choice! IMO.
Everyone hollers that a 44 Mag is the minimum, but you are much more likely to deliver accurate follow-up shots with a 357 Mag then with a 44 Mag.
I would rather have the ability to deliver 2-3 accurate follow-ups with a good 357 Mag using 180 grain hard-cast bullets then 1 shot with a 44.
But that's just me, I reckon.

If he wanted to eat you, all it would take is one wrong move. Just watch some YouTube videos of them chasing down prey. They’re incredibly agile for their size.
Your only chance would be if it wasn’t terribly interested in eating you. You’re probably better off climbing the tree. Even though they can climb too, your chances are better than on the ground.
Anyway, this is all completely hypothetical. I hope you wouldn’t venture out into bear country with your only plan being “I’ll just hide behind a tree until it gets bored.”

That’s a very good point. It doesn’t do you any good to have something you can’t shoot accurately.
I can shoot my 44 well enough, but I know I can shoot my 10mm better, so that’s part of the reasoning I brought that with me instead.
If I was actually camping in bear country, I’d probably have a 45-70 or shotgun with slugs.
I guess the bottom line is, practice with whatever you have, whether it’s bear spray, handgun, or a long gun.

See, I figured that was the losing move. Because in bursts, it seems like I’ve seen them get about 20-30ft up an avg tree in seconds. Much faster than I could. I’d have to see him well before he got the drop on me

Well it’s purely academic for one thing lol I’m just saying that an adult grizzly opposite a large arse diameter tree would have an all day affair lungeing at me over and over as I circle the tree. Unless I just happened to encounter the Kyrie Irving of grizzlies or I tripped on a pine cone or something

I would take some world class balls to be able to pull a handgun and get anything accurate off on a rampaging grizzly.

I am confident I could do it with a moose. Bears are wildly quick and I would last about four seconds if the bear decided to wait three. It would lurch forward and snatch you with a paw immediately.

In your scenario is the bear not allowed to just back up 10 ft and run around the tree to kill you?
