i know, you're right. but comments like "bear spray is just human seasoning derp derp derp" are the kinds of snarky jokes you hear in places like Alaska and Montana by locals who think that just because they live in those states they have some sort of inside knowledge of life in the backcountry. usually the people you hear saying that are about a hundred pounds overweight and they work at the airport car rental place or the gas station. basically grizzly country baws.

almost all actually experienced backcountry veterans will tell you that yes, a gun is the preferred defense against bears for someone that knows what they're doing, but that bear spray is absolutely effective as well. the BEST defense is probably a combination of the both if you are in a group - spray to slow it down, pistol to finish it off.

How many times have you used bear spray?

Wear bells so they hear you coming to avoid a close encounter, and carry bear spray at the ready.

Keep awareness and look for bear scat on the trail.

You can tell black bear scat from grizzly scat as often the grizzly scat will have a faint pepper smell and have little bells in it.

bears just love to roll and rub on things that have bear spray on them; however, they hate it when you shoot it in their eyes and nose

Camping where man eaters are in the area. Kinda like diving around man eating sharks….
Bro you camp anywhere in America you have some man eater around. In Louisiana, we have bears(albeit cute ones) and mountain lions. Yes, we have mountain lions

Kind of disagree. A bear killing 2 people and a dog is not doing that out of hunger

A sick bear would. Its an irregularity, but occasionally happens.

Most brown bear attacks are food or cub related. But this is the time of year bears are stuffing themselves to the max. There's a black bear around our place that weighs over 600 lbs right now.

do they even eat humans?

Yes.

Kid was killed at a minesite (second day of work, from Oklahoma) 20 miles from here by one. He died 40 yards away from coworkers and they didnt even hear it. Bear ate almost all of him.

Question. Ive wondered this my whole life. How long do yall think you could play "other side of the tree" with a grizzley. With like a 3ft diameter pine or such. Obviously the bear would get insanely pissed off after a while, which would be fricking terrifying, but half of my brain tells me if you did it for an hour or so the bear would give up. I mean, he cant go through the tree

The bear would simply follow the same path around the tree and meet you about 3/4 of an inch from where you and the bear first met LOL....unless you are saying you could run faster in a 3 diameter circle than a bear at which point I would think you being able to stop before running up the bear's backside is gonnq be the issue. Either way the bear is gonna get you I would think and sooner than later...

Hell of alot more agile than a 600-700lb grizzly. I'm sure the bear gets you almost every time in a straight line. But shuffling around a massive tree like gruesome mutilation is after you I'm not so sure. But maybe

Not even close to being as agile as a bear of any size beyond maybe a very young cub.

come on baw! we're talking the OT here, of course we all have more strength, speed, and agility than a wild bear that hunts live animals to survive

It’s an answer, but not the best one.

There’s a guide that killed one with a 9mm that was about to attack his client, so it is possible, but ideally, you want to have at least a .44 magnum in a handgun.

Whatever you have, I’d want to have the heaviest hard cast bullets I could find.

Hell the million $ bar in Jackson has one mounted that was killed by an old boy with a damned knife. I think it may been the basis for the revenant but I ain't sure. If that man can kill one with a knife I am certain that agile motherfricker in this thready could probably kill one with his granny's knitting needle....

My wife talks so much there’s no chance a bear would stay within 10 miles of us hiking.

Also a good time to be extremely flatulent...talking, farting, both good ways to send them packing.

Being eaten alive by a Grizzly bear has got to one of the worst ways to die. Those poor people.

And don’t forget wolves - they live there too snd there’s a lot more of them than bears.

They are also more than one of them where there is only one bear. Bears quit most of the time...the stories of them charging and stopping are numerous. Not so wolves...they don't pretend. Unless they are shot they are going to kill.

Damned man in Jackson killed that bear with his teeth, not his knife. Thats a baddddd man to gnaw a bear to death. I bet as that bear was dying he was thinking "you mean this is what I have been doing to other animals my entire life...I am an a-hole. I deserve to die...."
