Milwaukee is a shite hole but the surrounding suburbs can be nice

I guess I mean the area. I was in the city at a marina/park on the lake which was nice but this was LSU/Wiscy weekend 2016 and I know that was a lifetime ago.

Great spot. Not cheap. Although in 2017 we rented an Airbnb right by Appalachian “Ski Mtn”—in March. Not to “ski” but it was still open. Anyway it was pretty and dirt cheap. I’m sure at least double now.

I was going off of the "cheap to rent" areas within Milwaukee which I have frequented plenty.

Colorado Springs is a 12 hour drive for you. There are lots of places available to rent.

My wife’s family has a lake house in Summerville, WV. Hidden gem.

the temperature difference was marked. Like 20 degrees.

But it still gets hotter than balls in thick of summer. The main differences are: evenings and mornings are a lot cooler here, and the suffering is a smaller portion of the year. Winters are usually still mild. And although Louisiana was less humid this summer, the humidity difference is normally huge between here and there.

The area where Northwest Arkansas and Missouri/Oklahoma all converge is this way also.

Summersville, WV

My wife's family is from NW of there. Parts of WV are incredible. I was surprised how hot and muggy and mosquitoey it is in the summer, but they are at a whopping 750 ft, so makes sense. Summersville is closer to 2000. you can get to that 3/4k summer sweet spot in WV. But then you're dealing with some rough winters.

I'm thinking more like Wisconsin and possibly Idaho (since I have family there). Not looking for anything touristy which = expensive.

You just said it. Idaho.

There are many places in Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, etc.

Scenic. Good summer weather.

I spent a week in central Michigan in June visiting family. It's beautiful country, cheap, weed friendly, highs never got above 80, no hoopties driving slow in the left lane (wink wink). The only downside while I was there was the smoke from the Canadian wildfires. I'd definitely go back, but I hate the cold more than I hate the warm summers down here. I mean, we couldn't even go swimming in the summer unless we were getting in the hot tub.

This really is a real possibility for me as well. I WILL be going away for some two-week trip late next summer to cooler climates. I can at times work remotely and have a ton of vacation built up.

If you’re in central texas then definitely ruidoso NM and maybe cloudcroft? Or somewhere in the Colorado mountains. It’s a Texans birthright to have winter home in one of those states

If you don't want to be on a lake, you could easily find a cabin in the Northwoods of Wisconsin or Michigan near a nice/fun small town. Beautiful country and the weather in the summer is usually great. Though you can sometimes get those low pressure systems that hang around for five days with 50 degree weather and rain.

I just checked, you can get a nice little cottage in the woods near Minocqua, WI (an awesome Northwoods tourist town) for about $2,400 for the month of July.

Definitely not Wisconsin. The OT has taught me that they have at least 9 months of Winter every year.

The other question, is there a better way to look other than ABNB and Vrbo? Seems like both the renter and owner would benefit avoiding their fees
