I mean, we couldn't even go swimming in the summer unless we were getting in the hot tub.
Yeah, my brother has a friend up there on one of the lakes. He has a nice pontoon boat to cruise around on and the water is beautiful, but you can’t even swim in it because even in August the water temps are in the 60’s-70 degrees. frick that.

Anywhere decent in Idaho is going to be expensive as hell, especially for a summer rental.
Even the little podunk towns have next to nothing available.

You will probably need to look at somewhere like Missouri, Arkansas, etc, that gets overlooked.

Durango, CO stays in the 80s/50s June-Aug for the most part. Taos, NM as well. Just a couple of off the normal beaten path places.

Durango is great but definitely not cheap. Not sure about Taos.

If you don't want to be on a lake, you could easily find a cabin in the Northwoods of Wisconsin or Michigan near a nice/fun small town. Beautiful country and the weather in the summer is usually great. Though you can sometimes get those low pressure systems that hang around for five days with 50 degree weather and rain.

I just checked, you can get a nice little cottage in the woods near Minocqua, WI (an awesome Northwoods tourist town) for about $2,400 for the month of July.

What site are you using. Can't be too small because I have two small kids...

For the Minocqua area:

quote:

June 73° / 50°, 9 days rain
July 78° / 54°, 8 days rain
August 76° / 52°, 8 days rain

Lol most of the country was. If you are going off this summer, you will need to be within 100 miles of Canada to get cooler weather.

Me and my wife go to Waconia, Minnesota every summer to spend time with her mother. It's really nice and on a lake. It's also about an hour from Minneapolis if you want to do city things too.

I'll throw out Fergus Falls, MN. Show up in June and leave at the end of September. Your average high won't crack 80° and your average low would be around 60° all Summer. Decent cost of living, good access to lakes and rivers, crime isn't terrible at a glance, far enough away from Minneapolis. Sounds like a winner.

I’d check out smaller lakes in Michigan, ie Burt lake, Torch lake, Huggins Lake, Douglas Lake, Crooked lake, Gull lake, Glen lake or go to the UP around Marquette. I would say the best town to summer vacation in Michigan would be traverse city.

I lived up in MN and IA. Both have over 95 and 100 days plus high humidity.

Good luck. You may have to look at Alaska and Canada.

Not true. Here in central Va at only 300 feet elevation we had the mildest summer in my 30 years of being here. Very dry. It got into the 50's at night three different weeks during August. July was hot and humid, but nothing like what you all had down south.

SW Virginia is mountainous and cheaper than NC/TN. And the lakes are warm enough to swim in.

Not looking for anything touristy which = expensive

People are like "Taos, Bar Harbor, Colorado" Might as well have told him to get a house on the Cape or Outer Banks.

To OP:
1. Google Maps "Minnesota"
2. Pick a lake, any lake, find a nearby small town
3. ????
4. Profit

My hometown. Beautiful as can be in summer. Winters not made for your average southern baw. Have to embrace the winter and get out and do stuff. For some it’s their favorite season. Check out Mount Bohemia ski area. Legit powder days, some of the best snow east of the rockies

I envied someone I met in Houston who went to Scotland for August of every year. She had been there and found a rooming house where she had the same room every August and it was her second home.

I second the Marquette suggestion. Roscommon around Higgins/Houghton lakes is a pretty solid suggestion as well.

Anywhere on Moosehead Lake in Maine. 100 years ago it was where the very rich fled summer in the cities. Lake water is potable and cold. It has land locked salmon. Beautiful place with lots of fishing and hunting.

Sounds nice! But if the OP wants to guarantee cooler weather, he's probably going to need to head north, and go up in elevation to at least 6,000 ft+. He didn't want to drive too far, so all the northern coastal areas like the Oregon, Washington, and California coasts are out. Same for New England.

My families' lakehouse is just outside Eagle River, short of the UP border, and our lake gets plenty warm for swimming. I believe it was up to around 80 degress this summer.
