Durango, CO stays in the 80s/50s June-Aug for the most part. Taos, NM as well. Just a couple of off the normal beaten path places.

I think Milwaukee is a great summer town and the lake is beautiful in that area.

Milwaukee is a shite hole but the surrounding suburbs can be nice

Michigan and WI can get steamy but we spent a week in way north WI on a lake. It was perfect weather. But mosquitoes and I’m not sure what’s cheap out there for rent these days.
ETA:
I haven’t looked at rental rates, but get above 3-4k feet in WNC.

Never spent much of any time in GA but I've seen this area mentioned here several times. Sounds like a gem I would like.

How is NE too far to drive but Idaho isn’t?

I'm in Central Texas. Maine is like an extra 8 hours.

Looks like this week Kalamazoo maxes out at 80 and the lows are in the high 50s
Kalamazoo is absolutely awful

No reason to ever be south of traverse city if you’re in Michigan

Yeah if you want to be on a decent lake, “cheap” is unlikely. If you wanted to just be in a random small town, cheap is doable but I’d get bored as hell personally if I wasn’t on or had easy access to a decent lake.

Can't argue that. I've got family there and it's ALWAYS cool when we go to visit. Even in July/August. Beautiful town too.

Some small towns between Jackson and Bozeman. Just drove this a week ago. Hwy 32 and 33 between Ashton, ID and Victor, ID.

My cousin owned Grumpys Goat Shack in Victor. Closed last year. Great place.

The other question, is there a better way to look other than ABNB and Vrbo? Seems like both the renter and owner would benefit avoiding their fees

How cool is southern Appalachia during summer? I have only been during fall and winter TBH.

We can see NC mtns from our house in Upstate SC (to borrow a concept from Sarah Palin). We are in the mountains as far as SC goes. We normally go to MT for summers but didn’t last year. And this year we were here first week of July and got back a week ago. Out immediate stop before returning here was Baton Rouge and stayed a night NE of Birmingham on way. Point being: the temperature difference was marked. Like 20 degrees.

But it still gets hotter than balls in thick of summer. The main differences are: evenings and mornings are a lot cooler here, and the suffering is a smaller portion of the year. Winters are usually still mild. And although Louisiana was less humid this summer, the humidity difference is normally huge between here and there.

ETA: but as mentioned, to 30-45 minutes north of here and it’s a lot cooler. But also not cheap.
