The costs of increased wages and benefits will be passed to the consumers who can't afford to pay more for a vehicle. Foreign car manufacturers will reap financial benefits. I guess the UAW doesn't understand basic economics.

Why is that insane? Is it just because you’ve been led to believe that. What’s insane is having taxpayers bail these auto companies out when the mismanage funds and then not requiring to pay it back. What’s insane is paying them and then they move their companies overseas and put Americans out of work, the same Americans that’s tax Maloney bailed them
Out.
You’re a ducking idiot!!

Driving my 10 year old truck until the wheels fall off. When they do, I'll only put new wheels on.
Although still looking for a decent 73-74 square body Chevy truck.

Tell me again why the auto makers don’t try and move toward less human labor and more toward machines doing the assembly?
Detroit AutoPlant Interview of GM CEO Mary Barra about EV's:
Interviewer: Talking about GM's push for EVs, you refer to "green energy," but where does the electricity for your EVs come from?
Mary Barra: (with an incredulous expression) From that plug over there. (Pointing to the wall outlet)
Interviewer: No ... I mean what is the source of the electricity here?
Mary Barra: (with a furrowed brow) Oh, uh, it comes from a wire.
...
No, I'm not kidding. It was an actual interview carried on CNBC a year or so ago.

The wage increase (maybe not that much of one) should be within the realm of possibility IMO given the increased automation and rapid inflation. The Automakers have been given massive grants and low interest loans to build out the production capacity for electric cars. So you know the UAW wants a piece of that. I am not really against them pushing for raises.
Automakers would have to hire more people to cover for a 32 hour work week. I would not be okay with this unless other industries and competitors went in that direction. If everyone did that, there would be more employment and better work/life balance.
I would never be okay with a pension if they currently have a 401k. Non starter. They should be asking for better employer match into a 401k instead.

Jim Farley and Mary Barra are idiots. I would much prefer to buy a car from Elon Musk.

Could it be they are aiming high to see what they can get?
One would think that's the approach but man they are going way to high, and not going to get the customers on board going this route.
No customer is going to side with them on the "less hours/more pay" approach. That's just a bad look, that hurts anything else that they may want and may be reasonable. Especially since their customers are seeing the cost of cars going WAY up right now. Heck the repos on cars has skyrocketed too.
I wonder how Biden is going to respond to them wanting the temp workers curbed, but they just brought in a bunch of illegals and want them to get work permits.

To add...keep in mind that a lot of the profiting these companies are getting now is from data, and SaaS model they are going where you have to subscribe to things. Especially since the govt is forcing them to go EV.
This is after the sale money that even dealers probably aren't getting enough of a kick back from, though they still service and support the car.
I hope the OEMs come back and tell the govt, if you want to get involved you need to drop the EV push as its a losing endeavor and causing prices to skyrocket.
Of course Biden will let our national brand prices skyrocket while they'll sooner than later let the Chynese bring in their dirt cheap EVs with no barriers.

Why do you think EVs are making ICE vehicles more expensive?

I worked at a GM plant in early 90's. I saw first hand how these unions operate. I had a grievance filed against me by the UAW because I moved my desktop computer from one side of my desk to the other. When I asked the union to do it they said it would take 2 weeks before they could get to it. I moved it that afternoon. I was just given a slap on the wrist by my management as I was new to the plant, and they said just don't do it again.
Back in the 90's UAW paid zero dollars for healthcare. No healthcare premiums and GM paid every dime of healthcare costs for UAW members and their families. While I was there, they asked the union if they would pay $5.00 a month in healthcare premium to help with the costs, and they said NO, and would strike if they tried to get it done.
Also played in a golf scramble tourney on Saturdays.. there was a "union guy" who would clock in and tell people he was going to be "around the plant" to page him if they needed him. He would show up at the American Legion golf course, play 18, and go back at 4:00 and clock out all while making overtime. He did this every weekend both Sat and Sun.
I have no love lost for UAW..

My point was more that they are being forced to lose money with EVs, and being forced to transition non-organically. ICE vehicles are getting more expensive with all the tech that is being added to them.

Yeah...never been part of a union or worked at a union shop, but I've dealt with them. Some really fricked up rules that just hamper production and real hustle to get stuff done.
Worse I dealt with from afar was the excuse on why something missed the expeditated airline schedule....apparently the guy who printed the comm docs out for the product was a union guy and on lunch at the time the driver got there. The driver had a small window to get it and to the airport, and he missed that window....because no one else in the office could make copies of the commercial docs but that union guy.

defined-benefit pensions for all workers instead of 401(k) accounts, and company-financed health care in retirement.
This part in particular is extra stupid. We have seen so many defined benefit pension plans go belly up and these people are demanding to switch over to one.
The plans can't meet their promised obligations, so they turn to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, who very clearly states that they will not cover the full pension benefit amount, but a percentage of it instead.
And if the PBGC is struggling to pay it's portion of a union worker's private pension? Never fear, the American taxpayer will be on the hook to bail them out!
American Rescue Plan Act Gave $91B to PBGC to Prop Up Private Pensions
F off UAW. You can keep your 401(k) because the American taxpayer is not interested in funding golden public OR private pensions that the majority of US workers do not enjoy.

They need to fire all of them. Then hire non union workers

LOL....I've seen robots built that can take intricate pieces for contactor relays from a bowl feeder and weld them together and never miss a beat. Robots could be built and programmed to completely build an automobile.
