On a team like Miss State which is run heavy it puts pressure on them since they do not have the explosive offense to keep up with you scoring on the first drive. 1 score then becomes 2, etc.

They're immediately 7 points behind which already builds pressure on a team that lacks explosive options to keep up. Totally different for them if they get the ball first 0-0 and can dictate the game how they want.

Put your best foot forward. If you trust your offense more, take the ball. Trust your defense, defer.

Don’t make it more complicated than that, unless there are extreme weather considerations.

Can I highjack your thread and ask a related question?

In NFL OT, if you win the toss and you trust your D, why wouldn’t you defer if you when the toss. If they kick a field goal, you still got the ball back with the opportunity to win or tie and go into another overtime.

Maybe more of a thought for a defensive battling? Like if they’ve managed one to no TD’s all day what are the odds they’ll get one on the first possession of OT.

I can't explain it, but statistically the team that takes the ball first averages an extra possession per game over the team that defers.

Personally, I prefer deferring.

It is funny how times change. When I was a kid in the 80's and 90's, it seemed like 95% of the coin toss winner wanted the ball. Now its the opposite.

Momentum. Set the tone. First blood. Perhaps your offense is far superior to your defense and you want more offensive possessions. Maybe your QB is the hyper type pre-game and needs to get in there quick. Lots of possible reasons.

With the new clock rules, getting the ball first in the second half will be huge. Especially if you are losing the game. There will be fewer comebacks in CFB with the new rules.

Walnut has a good point. It really depends if your team is capable of setting the tone of the contest.

Given how awful our defense is, I'd rather take a chance at giving them a lead to play with rather than playing catch-up.

If your D is coached by Matt House, you want the ball first

I would kick off that would give me a chance to get a feel for the game and make halftime adjustments to finish the game off. I never understood the receiving in the first half.

The analytics show the first team to score has a higher winning percentage. If you feel you can score on your first possession, you have given yourself a statistical advantage. In the NFL, the first team to score wins 65% of the time, which is a very statistically significant number, I’m not sure what it is in college.

This is misleading and amateur statistical work. This is also probably the level of detail and analysis Brian Kelly is being fed.

Count me in as an always defer guy. To me it just comes down to I think receiving the 2nd half kickoff is more valuable than receiving the opening kickoff. The opening kickoff is always 0-0. You don't know what it's going to be like at halftime but regardless of if you're ahead or if you're trailing, it always feels good to know you're going to start on offense first coming out of halftime. You collect yourself and get ready to start chipping away at a deficit or extend a lead/break a tie. There's an added bonus of being able to score at the end of the half and then still receive at the start of the next which can only be achieved by receiving the 2nd half (or an onside kick, thanks Sean Payton). You also hate being on the other end of such a thing too.

I never understood why BK does this. The biggest opportunity for a point swing in a game is the last 2 minutes of the first half and first 2 minutes of the second half. Up to a 14 point swing.

This is all bullshite. You will average the exact same number of possessions whether you get the ball first in the first half or the second. It doesn’t matter.

Your assumption that the team kicking to start the game will get the ball last in the first half is just not true. But if it was then the other team would get the ball last in the game.

The frick? Now this is a take! They don't do this because if you did and they score a touchdown you are unemployed on Monday. Hell you may be looking for one either way.

Away game : You want the ball to take the crowd out of the game if you score and make the home team come from behind.

Home Game: You defer and put your defense on the field at home with the home crowd and hope for a TD or FG with a mistake and get ahead early at home.

I played college football and this is the strategy 90% of the time.

Funny, decades ago teams would almost always take the ball to go on offense first.

The option to defer to the second half wasn't always an option. The choices were whether to receive, kick or which end to defend. The college rule changed in the early 80's. The NFL didn't adopt the rule until 2008.
