Feel good answer but really does more harm in the end. When you get a rescue that means a dog from a litter has nowhere to go. Very often these dogs are given to a rough crowd and introduced to fighting.

I’ve got a 5 and 1 year old and we got a golden retriever that was 9 months old (rehomed). She has been a fantastic dog and the kids love her (she is now 1.5). The only thing with her is that she has extremely strong exercise and activity needs…this varies amongst goldens but we have to play a shite ton of fetch and run her a lot or she chews up stuff. She is a good family dog though.

Non pitbull mix from the side of the road. Will the most loyal and best friend you'll ever have.

No such thing.
Best overall breed for you, and I don’t know you.

Best is so subjective
Do you mind shedding? Drooling, slobbering, etc. Big? Small? Hyper? Do you hunt?
My wife is allergic so we got a Shih Tzu. It’s 12 lbs and never leaves our side. No smell no shedding and looks like an Ewok. Not for everyone but he’s my little buddy and every housewife in the burbs will stop you.

Wirehaired pointing griffons. Excellent companions!

Our beagle is more a less a cat/rat.
He just hangs out, doesn't like to be petted too much. Only friendly with us when he thinks we're giving him a treat.
He forages through the house looking for available trash cans to get into. We cannot leave doors open to places with waste cans. Trust me, I've tried teaching him. He knows he's in trouble after putting his head down and acting all sad.. He doesn't care. Little a-hole.
He seems to always have allergic reactions going on which cause him to scratch til he bleeds. No telling how many steroid shots he's had now. Last one was Nubz. He developed a damn allergy to them.
He's 12 and my little buddy though. Little a-hole dog ..

My daughter has a golden doodle, and he is an awesome dog. Extremely smart, doesn’t shed, great with people, obedient, and calm (but I hear that’s not the norm for this type of dog). The only downside is that he requires frequent brushing (at least every few days) and and full groom (every 2 months or so).

I second this if you hunt. Mine is great with my kids, loves to play, not a psycho like GSP, and smart.
If you want a working dog that's good in the house. A WPG is my pick.

Shi Tzu or havanese. Both are very social.

Don’t get a Chocolate, get a black. Chocolate’s reputation for being hardheaded and stubborn is completely true. If you want a lab, get the black. I had a black, yellow and now have a chocolate, I’ll never own one again…
