Saints switch Taysom Hill to QB on roster

As noted by Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.football, the team shifted the designation of Taysom Hill from tight end to quarterback. He had been listed as a tight end for all of camp. The move opens the door to the Saints potentially using Hill as QB2, with a third quarterback added to the gameday roster under the new emergency quarterback rule. Under that approach, Derek Carr would serve as QB1, Hill would fill the role of QB2, and Jameis Winston or rookie fourth-rounder Jake Haener would be the emergency third quarterback. The third quarterback could play only if both Carr and Hill were both unavailable due to injury or ejection.

If that’s what the Saints do, it’s a creative application of the rule. The second quarterback can play at will and line up at other positions like tight end; only the emergency third quarterback is restricted to operating under center. Other teams might gripe about this, because that’s what teams tend to do when an opponent identifies a legitimate loophole. The easy response is this — go get yourself a Taysom Hill, and make him your QB2. The only downside to this approach is that it forces the Saints to use Hill as the second-string quarterback, in the event Carr is injured. The upside is that it allows the Saints to dress an extra player, since they won’t be devoting three regular spots to Carr, Hill, and Winston or Haener. Winston or Haener would count as an extra man, under the new emergecy quarterback rule

So Winston can’t play unless both Carr and Hill get hurt?
That’s horrible if true

I worry about who is going to be the lead man running the ball while Alvin is out.
nothing against Jammal Willaims or Kendre Miller but I think this move suggests there will be a run package for Taysom like last season?
if not then what?

Correct, but we get an extra player now
So that translates to an extra special teams DB instead of a 3rd QB

i wouldn't say it's horrible. it is a gamble, but i'd rather see jameis with a full week of prep with the ones. rather taysom just come in for the remainder of a game.

Seems pretty easy for Taysom to “cramp up” as needed in the situation that we don’t want him to actually play QB2

What would keep a team from switching there second string RB to QB to do the same? This seems ripe for abuse.

Plausible deniability

That would be dumb considering he is the winningest QB on the team

Hill can always "stub his toe" coming off the field.
Lots of ways to "fake" an injury if the worst occurs.

Unless the player in question has legitimate experience as a qb, I doubt it would be allowed.
That dolphins rb from a few years back when they ran wild cat maybe could get away with it (Ronnie Brown?), but you can't just claim anyone as a qb.

Goodell just called the head of officiating

Taysom would probably do a better job at qb2 anyway. Winston is done

But can I start taysom as my fantasy TE??

How many reps does the #2 guy get with the 1s in week to prepare? My understanding was very little. Honestly running Taysom’s package to finish a game is probably less of a gamble then putting Jameis out there with little to no prep time. If Carr is out more than just the rest of the game then Winston moves to QB1 and Hill stays QB2.

Given the NFL's fairly recent stance of being on the lookout to punish players for faking injuries (remember what happened to Cam Jordan last season), I don't think that the Saints would try to have Taysom do that. I think they would just ride with him for the remainder of that game and then prep Jameis to start the following week if Carr's injury were to keep him out then.

Do you even need to have an injury? I just thought if you go to #3, #2 can't return to the game.

Could someone like Jontre kirklin go down in the same type role.

We have not heard of Taysom getting much of any reps as QB from this camp that I recall, plus he was hurt for a good bit of it. This is a very opposite approach that Sean Payton had in that he never used as Taysom as QB2 in game like this. When QB1 got hurt in game we saw Jamies step in...I also remember Trevor Semian going as QB2 in game from an injury. Payton said that was because of Taysom's lack of QB reps in practice, and he had been preparing both in practice and film room with TEs/RBs so he wasn't prepared enough. Then after that game, he moved Taysom to QB2 once he had a full week of practice and gameplanning to prepare him for the next game.
