Great name and theme for Houston and now they are the shitty Texans.

Didn’t they toss around naming that team the Toros? That would have been better and made logical sense since they have a bull on their helmet.

I am a Titans fan living in Nashville, and I’m triggered/pissed that Adams Strunk is holding that brand hostage. Just give it back to Houston. You’re not making any money with it

Oilers, maybe one day. Redskins, no chance anytime soon, the current woke NFL or media would never allow it.

I wouldn't be so pissed about the Oilers brand being stuck in TN if the 'Texans' name wasn't such a shitty pro sports team name.

Titans owner holds the rights to the Oilers name and branding. Previous comments have revealed there is no intention to give up the rights.

But maybe they would be willing to sell those rights. Not sure how much it would take or if the McNairs (Texans ownership) would be interested in paying to obtain it.

Unfortunately, they are making money off that name. All the throwback Oilers hats, jerseys, t-shirts etc. are a nice little secondary revenue stream for them. I wish they would give it up, but they’re not going to let go of the money.

I heard something a while back that may or may not be true. Since they “retired” using the branding, but are grandfathered with trademark rights, if they were to try and transfer or sell the rights to someone else, it would trigger a legal review and would most likely face a challenge from the Edmonton Oilers. Since they never abandoned their use of the name, they would be granted universal ownership of the naming rights, since their franchise has kept the name in constant use. Seems like b.s. because of all the teams that share names in the two leagues, Panthers, Jets etc., but who knows.

I’m no patent and trademark attorney, so take that with a grain of salt.

The Oilers belong in Houston. But the Adams' are too petty and greedy. While the McNair's are too dumb to get it back.

And the NFL gets softer(socially conscious) every day. So the Redskin name is gone forever.

You could have every Native American chief in the country sign a petition saying to bring it back but when the white liberals have decided it’s offensive, there’s no coming back.

Dude Native American groups have been pushing to get that named changed since the 80s. Just because white liberals have declared everything racist doesn’t mean there are zero things that are racist and offensive and if you think it shouldn’t be up to white “liberals” to declare something racist then why should it be up to whire non liberals to decide it’s not?

Exactly my point. It wasn’t until the cultural wars lead by white liberals did anything change.

Does it not make a difference that the Edmonton Oilers are in Canada? Understood that they play US teams…

Oddly enough, Jerry Jones had the rights to the Texans name and gave up the rights for Houston to take the name.

Unlike the Titans that still use the Oilers name and imagery for licenced gear, the Chiefs never bothered once they moved to KC. People thought the Hunts owned the name, but they abandoned it when they moved. The register ran out on their rights and since it was associated with Dallas, Jones went ahead and picked up the rights. When the Texans were doing their name search, it came up at an owners meeting and he gave them the rights to the Texans.

--

"Houston is one of my favorite places in the country," Jones said. "No one worked or stood any harder on the table to have a franchise return to Houston. As a matter of fact, I actually had the rights to the name 'Texans' when Houston came. Bob McNair wanted that name, and I agreed to stand down and figured that would be great for them to call it the Texans."

The corporate sponsors threatend to pull out if the Redskins did not change their name. It would not matter if there were 15,000,000 signatures on a petition the Redskin name is never coming back. The Oilers name is retired but still owned by the Titans. The Titians are not going to change their name back to the Oilers just use the logo and uniforms for occasional throw back uniforms. It would be awesome if the Titans ownership did what Tom Benson did let ownership of the name revert to the league (or maybe it was NBA rules that did it I don't remember) instead of holding on to it after they changed from Hornets to Pelicans. That way Michael Jordan was able to purchase it from the league to rename his team. It would be awesome if the Titans did that with the Oilers so the Houston team could rebrand as the Oilers. However, that is not going to happen and the Texans are now over 20 years old so I don't see why they would even want to.
