In Ft Worth,,,,went to an AD,,,,,There was 17 Rolex’s on display, all were labeled “Exhibition Only”,,,not one for sale,,,,,,I asked why and they said so customers could get a feel for them and they would be more likely to buy one when they got an allocation,,,,,why would you keep $200k worth of product without the ability to sell it?

This is pretty simple people like to look before they buy I guess. Maybe they find the people that want the watches. They then have a couple of different sources for those watches. They let those people basically bid on it and you make the difference.
Did they have prices on the watches or just a display?

I can’t remember last time I went in but Lee Michaels had exhibition only but I swear they didn’t work. It’s great to see if something works on your wrist before dropping 10k plus.

Did you let the AD bang your wife? Because that's what is expected by Rolex these days.

They want to tease you with things you can't buy. If you see ones with the hands set to 10:10 and 31 seconds and the date is at 28 those are non-functional ones. Some are fully functional.

Obviously, it is so people can shop the watches but for most models it doesn't make sense because if you are in there just shopping then you will not be able to buy any of the models that they use exhibition watches for. People that have the relationship to buy a new Rolex at an AD almost certainly know exactly what they want and don't need to kick the tires.

I think the biggest reason is to prevent the cases from being empty.

BTW my understanding is they are owned by Rolex and only on loan. I have been curious when some show up for sale somewhere... maybe they already have. I own a watch prominently marked "PROTOTYPE" that was never supposed to leave the factory of a certain Swiss manufacturer but it did. Note I have never bothered to hold an exhibition only Rolex so I have no idea if the cases are marked or not. Anyone know? Specifically the ones with the hands fixed.

Because the current Rolex sales model is similar to Ferrari in that the Dealer picks the customer, not the customer picks the timepiece.

One must be deemed "worthy" to buy.

Rolex calls the shots and makes the AD ask how high when they say jump. Or they will pull your AD status.

The waitlist is a Rolex thing. The AD wants to sell more watches but Rolex decides the allocation. It may take a month, 3 months, 6 months or a year. It’s a freaking mystery of the universe when yours will arrive.

Hate the game not the AD players.

Good luck!

That’s the way all of the AD have to do it pay for display only inventory put your name on a list when they call you show up and pay get a watch.

The will never admit it, but I think Rolex saw every brokedick realtor who had one good year and plant/factory operator wearing their products and decided it was hurting their status as the standard in high luxury watches. Thus, they severely cut supply in hopes of weeding out the “undesirables”.

It seems counterintuitive to refuse to sell your product in the face of great demand. But when the prestige of your name means EVERYTHING in your market I guess you do what is necessary to maintain that prestige

Same situation in BR, it’s because it looks way better having display models rather than completely empty shelves so people can’t even look at them or try them on. They aren’t hoarding watches in the back, Rolex doesn’t produce enough watches on purpose, exclusivity is part of the brand.

They're so exclusive you can't even buy them anymore!

I've quit lusting over them. Saving up for a tudor instead.
