Another American Company will be killed off by a Foreign Company.

quote:

Nearly a century after W.M. Davis and his sons opened a grocery store in Miami and 84 years after moving its headquarters to Jacksonville, Winn-Dixie is being acquired by Aldi.

In an announcement Wednesday morning, Aldi said that it would acquire Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets from Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers in a move to expand the Batavia, Illinois-based company’s presence in the Southeast.

The deal includes nearly 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi, Aldi said in a news release.

"Like ALDI, Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket have long histories and many loyal customers in the Southeast and we look forward to serving them in the years to come," said Jason Hart, CEO, ALDI. "The time was right to build on our growth momentum and help residents in the Southeast save on their grocery bills. The transaction supports our long-term growth strategy across the United States, including plans to add 120 new stores nationwide this year to reach a total of more than 2,400 stores by year-end."

Publix was considered expanding into Louisiana at one point.

Feel like someone recently commented somewhere on this site that they thought it odd that Winn-Dixie hasn't been forced to remove Dixie from their name... And now today that will essentially happen

Not sure how this would work. Aldi stores are very small and Winn Dixie are way too large to convert to an aldi

They are buying them, but not converting all of them. Literally from your link:

quote:

According to Aldi’s Hart, some Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets stores will be converted into the Aldi format. But "for those stores we do not convert, our intention is that these continue to operate as Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores."

Agreed. Maybe the plan is just buying the properties, tearing it down and rebuilding? Still probably have to sell off a piece of each one to a strip mall or Starbucks or something.

I think the Winn Dixie’s here in BR are pretty underrated so hope they keep them going.

Not accurate.

LINK
quote:

"ALDI will operate Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores with the same level of care and focus on quality and service, as we also evaluate which locations will convert to the ALDI format to better support the neighborhoods we'll now have the privilege of serving," added Hart. "For those stores we do not convert, our intention is that these continue to operate as Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores."

WD’s in BR are the worst. Awful produce and high prices.

Along with Piggly Wiggly, there’s a reason there’s no more WDs in my area. They got outsmarted and outworked by much better store chains.

Good. ALDI is kind of a nice store, but I’ve only been to ones in England. I know they exist here, but I’ve never seen one.

The Aldi I went to in McComb was kind of cheap and trashy. Like Dollar General trashy.
