New cars are generally supposed to be better than the old cars, by virtue of the march of technology and lessons learned in their design. As far as consumers are concerned, though, that may not be the case, according to new research from J.D. Power.

According to the research, customer satisfaction with new vehicles is in steady decline. In 28 years of J.D. Power's Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout Study (APEAL), the latest survey marks the first consecutive year-on-year decline in results. “The decline in consecutive years might look small, but it’s an indicator that larger issues may lie under the surface,” said Frank Hanley, senior director of auto benchmarking at J.D. Power.

The study takes in ten total factors, nine of which received lower scores from consumers over the last two years. The only area of improvement was in fuel economy. That's little surprise, as most automakers have been capable of improving their results in this area, and it's a matter not subject to taste.

The biggest area of dissatisfaction has been in the looks department. Scores have slid from 894 to 888, with customers simply not finding today's new cars as appealing as they once did. Notably, brand-new models aren't doing that well, scoring just 3 points higher than carryover models still in production from previous years.

The only ones bucking the trend was Dodge and Jaguar - both of which have an older lineup that hasn’t been redesigned (botched) in a while.

Car manufacturers need to back off the touch screens

Having to click through menus to adjust the AC or volume is absurd
Bring back the buttons!

I would be curious to know how many people would rather a cheaper vehicle without all the current technology features vs how many people would prefer to not have a cheaper vehicle in order to have all the current features.

I might have been part of that poll. I definitely agree.

Cars are better than they've ever been.

More powerful, safer, and of course, a lot more $$$$.

I am perfectly happy with my 11 year old truck with no touch screen.

Honestly it’s laughable that we have “no cellphones while driving” laws yet we have full 55 inch 4k OLED displays or giant arse iPods mounted to the dash

You used to be able to change the radio station, temp, etc all by touch and muscle memory, now it’s a touchscreen you gotta look at.

I think the vast majority of people want this. But it's probably a lot cheaper to have one central control unit via a touch screen to control everything. I hope this trend reverses.

I love a touchscreen for the infotainment display/navigation.

I likely would not buy a car with touchscreen climate controls. Traditional knobs & buttons only for me.

I bet you’ll find a correlation in the decrease in satisfaction with the increase in price.

When the full sized pickup that used to cost 25k os now 55k, the question everyone asks themselves is what the frick am i paying for?

Does it haul twice as much? No
Does it have twice the range? No
Does is give me blowies? No, unfortunately.

Doesn’t help that any defects are exacerbated by parts shortages, inflation, and shitty customer service, which is enabled by the outdated and shitty business model of going through dealerships.

This! On older cars you can adjust the ac and other settings just by feel and you could keep your eyes on the road. With the proliferation of touch screens in the interior, you have to take your eyes off the road now to make changes. I've always felt that was taking a step backwards in functionality.

I drove a 2023 Corolla rental for a week recently, and I thought it was a great car. The Apple system was completely hands-off. I was very surprised. And the gas mileage was great.

THIS!! If you look at an aircraft cockpit, the throttle, flaps, mixture, propellor, landing gear controls all have a different shape so you can recognize them by touch. Cars should be no different.

Truth. Dials, toggles, and sliders work fine for basic car operations and don't require a manual.

I have an 04 truck that, if he was still alive, my grandaddy could drive and he's been gone for nearly 40 years. The car interface was pretty much set and intuitive for decades.

Controlling the various systems via a tablet takes longer and is more distracting in many cases.
