I bought (near) identical caskets from them in Fall 2008 and early 2017, because that's what my parents wanted. I believe it was the monastic style. The price almost doubled in less than 8-1/2 years.

Maybe they were trying to recoup legal fees spent fight Big Funeral, maybe it was the 2016 flood damage to their shop, maybe it was because of their increased popularity. I don't know. But now, in addition to the shysters at the funeral home, you've got monks taking advantage of you too.

How is this taking advantage of you? No one forced you to buy from them.

If you're over a certain age you should plan out your own final arrangements, put aside the money out of your own pocket in a joint account and leave specific instructions. I know it is morbid but it is better than leaving that task and expense to your bereaved loved ones.

There's peace of mind and absolution in knowing this is the cemetery plot where daddy wanted to be buried, this is the headstone he wanted, this is the funeral home where he wanted a small service held, etc...

Depending on where you make the arrangements, many funeral homes actually allow you to pay for the services now so it's already done. Don't have to worry about price increases if you live another 5+ years, get to pick exactly what you want and not worry about people changing it to go cheap and "save money", and won't have to put any of that burden on your family during a difficult time.

Friend,

Surely you have me mistaken for someone else. I love my Roman Catholic brothers and sisters in Christ. My second favorite New Orleans author, Walker Percy, after only George Washington Cable, was a devout Catholic whose writings I love. Each time I go to St Joseph Abbey, which is seldom due to its location north of the Lake, I visit Percy’s grave at the Abbey. We go to RC Mass at least twice every year. Some of my favorite theologians and philosophers, likewise, are Roman Catholic. I forgive your mistake, but if you insist on continuing your specious lies, I will have no other option but to pray for you, not as a friend but as my enemy.

Yours,

My mom would get up out of the casket and slap me if I did not buy the cheapest casket possible to bury her in.

funeral homes really do take advantage of you.

They are worse than car salesmen.

They are specifically taking advantage of someone at their worst moment.

I did a fair amount of work in sales when I was younger... And spotting someone selling pisses me off. My cousin, who currently works in sales, is kind hearted. And he bought the pitch. He was then told to get up from the desk and go sit on the couch.

The guy had quoted a number on the phone and then tripled it in person. He figured no one would push back in a time of grief.

They are the scum of the earth. They arent your friend. They aren't actually sorry for your loss. You are nothing more than a dollar sign.

it's been 26 years but, i still remember going off on the person at the funeral home when they told me it would have cost half as much if we had made the deal BEFORE she died.

Some of that is because the funeral home acts like a loan shark for insurance premiums. The expend the money for a casket, their services, cards, etc. They file for the death certificate and then file for life insurance policy. Once they collect the money from the life insurance company, they send you a check for what is left from the proceeds of the insurance payout.

In most cases, they will not pay for a burial plot. For that some cemetaries want cash in hand before burial.

On a side point, I received a letter last week concerning a life insurance policy my dad had with life insurance company that went belly up and was absorbed by a larger company. Crazy thing is that he has been deceased for 7 years now, did the funeral home screw up and miss a policy that he had.

Check out this recent story from CBS Sunday Morning:

I think you are smart to pursue alternative options and this might be another one for comparison. It’s interesting that the website you found instructs you to “hold” that you are going outside the funeral home for a casket until after you’ve received the first itemized estimate.

this was what they did, it was still less than 48 hours from official time of death to burial

I’ve always thought the casket was in 2 parts and the actual “nice” part you see is not actually left in the ground???

Our family has bought several simple wooden caskets from St. Joseph’s Abbey. Support the monks. Don’t pay the thieving funeral home business.

My grandfather helped the monks start that program and taught some of them how to make the caskets. They also do nice wooden boxes for ashes.

thank you for the well wishes in this thread, rummy, coon. this place isn't as horrible as it seems sometimes.

everything has been ordered; i was able to get 2 really nice caskets with the fit and finish we wanted for the same price as the 'cheapo box' option the funeral home offered which they know absolutely nobody is going to buy.

Why not just buy the cheap 900 one from the funeral home. You can’t really tell the difference and they all leak. Was told this by a old HS friend who owns a local funeral home and he advised me to just pick a cheap one, anything else was a waste of money. Sorry for your loss, losing 2 ppl at once can’t be easy, prayers to you.

. Good on him, frick the state of Louisiana who at the urging of the funeral home cartel tried to shut the Priests from building and selling homemade caskets.
