we didn’t have my mother embalmed, there was a pretty big up charge for that, no vault either, just a casket

I wish we could all get over this burial thing. It is such a waste of land.

The best caskets are the ones with Wi-Fi and a built in GPS so you can see where you are going.

In Mississippi you can bury a body on private property, no funeral home or agency has to be involved. Same for cremation, ashes can be spread on private private with no involvement from funeral homes or state agencies.

as I get older I find myself being involved in the "behind the scenes" affairs after a death relatively often, funeral homes fly under the radar of being on the list of sleazy professions, they prey on peoples grief and emotions, gouge the frick out of them down to the smallest detail
this is so true - it’s terrible

Louisiana used to have a law that you had to but the casket from the funeral home - thanks to the monks at St Benedict - that rule is no longer in place - funeral homes used to charge families for a casket even if it was a cremation

St Joseph Abbey in Covington has beautiful cypress caskets made by the monks. Monks sued the funeral home association and made them accept them. They are beautiful BTW.

I'm not sure about these but we paid $5,000 for one for my mom.

She used it for about 30 minutes and then we buried it

I made a comment to the funeral director guy about what a rip off it was

I'm sure mom loved it though

Don't know if they still exsusy but I thought states had laws that you had to buy from funeral home. Don't know what state you live in

Yes, funeral homes must accept them.

Subject to the FTC funeral rule.

Ehh...I hate Federal Government overstepping against private businesses but I guess this is to prevent collusion and price fixing to keep things fair for the consumer.

Not sure I 100% agree with it as the funeral business seems pretty competitive and like any other business there should be one always willing to do it cheaper.

don’t you have to bury / cremate someone in 48hrs to do that?

Just buried my Dad, he was 27 days shy of his 90th birthday, I loved him and it was sad, but he lived an exceptional life and left a remarkable legacy. That leads me to the next part.

The funeral arrangement situaltion is weird and evoked a great deal of conflicting emotions for me. I mean it is tremendoulsy expensive, and I realize folks have to make a living, and there is no issue with money either with my Dad's estate or amongst my siblings, but still it just seems a bit excessive and I felt a tad guiltly about feeling that way.

To answer the original question, the caskets are around half to 40% of the cost of comparable ones at the funeral home we used, and if you are trying to save a buck or two, sounds reasonable to me.

Friend,

Our condolences for your loss. I have no experience with the website you posted, but the poplar veneer at $999 looks like the best casket and the best deal. LINK / We already have ours ordered from St Jospeh’s Abbey, but I suppose this would be an economical alternative.

Yours,

not sure of that but when she died, she had been in assisted living for a while, had out lived most of her friends and all of her siblings and had been "out of circulation" for years, my sister and I decided that there would be no service, we'd give our siblings immediate notice of her passing and a travel day followed by burial the next morning, if there is such a rule/law, the funeral home rep didn't bring it up, burial was an hour away from the funeral home and they waited until an hour or two prior to leave to allow any of our siblings to have one last viewing

Louisiana burial laws are totally different than Mississippi. In La. you have to be buried in a cemetery and the funeral home director has to be involved.

LA RS 37:848 states in part:

quote:

(2) If the body is to be held by the funeral establishment longer than thirty hours after the time of death, it shall be embalmed or the body may be refrigerated continuously at a temperature not to exceed forty-five degrees Fahrenheit.

(3) If the body is not embalmed or refrigerated, it shall be buried, cremated, or otherwise disposed of within thirty hours after death or as soon as possible after its release by the proper authorities.
