When my brother died, we paid out the arse for a casket, funeral homes really do take advantage of you. Get whatever you can afford.

And this is the very reason so many people are opting for cremation as opposed to the typical funeral. Those directors are like vultures sitting on tree branches waiting for someone to die so they can make bank.

I've already told my wife that if I die before her, I want to be cremated and she can do as she pleases with my remains. Hell, I don't even want or need an obit in the local paper since the people who know me will already know I'm dead.

The only thing I want is for her to have a big crawfish boil when the season rolls around and have a good time with family and friends telling stories----and lies about me.

Other than that, I don't give a rat's arse.

What’s the markup on the typical casket? Is that where funeral homes really make their money?

well if you read that site it says by federal law they have to but this is all new

I feel like a funeral home will have a million ways to back door you into more fees when you tell them "oh by the way i'm having a casket shipped to you"

I bet they recoup by charging a 'processing fee' for a casket not already in their inventory or distribution network. Shady MFers hang around dead people all day so you know they will frick a live person with $$.

It kind of feels like what auto shops do when you decide NOT to buy their tires but have them install tires you bring in or have shipped to them. Suddenly those mount and balance fees double b/c it's not 'their' tires.

Our family has bought several simple wooden caskets from St. Joseph’s Abby. Support the monks. Don’t pay the thieving funeral home business.

I bought (near) identical caskets from them in Fall 2008 and early 2017, because that's what my parents wanted. I believe it was the monastic style. The price almost doubled in less than 8-1/2 years.

Maybe they were trying to recoup legal fees spent fight Big Funeral, maybe it was the 2016 flood damage to their shop, maybe it was because of their increased popularity. I don't know. But now, in addition to the shysters at the funeral home, you've got monks taking advantage of you too.

I'm getting cremated. I don't want my family wasting tens of thousands on a casket and funeral.

shysters at the funeral home

as I get older I find myself being involved in the "behind the scenes" affairs after a death relatively often, funeral homes fly under the radar of being on the list of sleazy professions, they prey on peoples grief and emotions, gouge the frick out of them down to the smallest detail

I'm a woodworker. I'm going to start building my own casket when I'm like 60+. I can save money, do my hobby, and really make the kids and possible grandkids throw me some sympathy . Or it'll backfire and I end up in a crazy old person home with a quickness.

You think auto shops are bad, try motorcycle shops. Buy a tire on-line and have it shipped to your house and then take the wheel off the bike and take the new tire to a bike shop for them to swap and balance and they will try to rape you for $40 or more, and you've done most of the work.

A good motorcycle tire will run you $175 and up depending on the brand and for my big cruiser, I'm lucky to get 12K miles out of a rear tire and 20K out of the front tire. Sport bikes are a lot less due to the wear and tear riders put on them.

This is why I mount and balance my own tires, and have for years now on the motorcycles I've owned.

I'm not going to decide for myself. I told my wife to surprise me.

That's horrible, man. Would never make jokes at your expense over a topic like this. Hope you're okay.

If you're over a certain age you should plan out your own final arrangements, put aside the money out of your own pocket in a joint account and leave specific instructions. I know it is morbid but it is better than leaving that task and expense to your bereaved loved ones.

There's peace of mind and absolution in knowing this is the cemetery plot where daddy wanted to be buried, this is the headstone he wanted, this is the funeral home where he wanted a small service held, etc...

It’s not cheaping out. It’s being responsible and I would hope your mom would approve. These funeral homes have had this scam going for too long.

I bought my dad's from them about a year ago. No issues, same quality at funeral home.

Buried my dad in a St. Joseph's Abbey coffin and I know HE would have been very happy about that.

There are plenty of ways to save money on a funeral. For instance, at my great-grandmother’s funeral, we all brought shovels and filled in the hole ourselves. True story.
