Guitarist-songwriter-singer Robbie Robertson, who led the Canadian-American group the Band to rock prominence in the 1970s and worked extensively with Bob Dylan and Martin Scorsese, has died. He was 80.
According to an announcement from his management, Robertson died Wednesday in Los Angeles after a long illness.
In a statement, Robertson’s manager of 34 years, Jared Levine, said, “Robbie was surrounded by his family at the time of his death, including his wife, Janet, his ex-wife, Dominique, her partner Nicholas, and his children Alexandra, Sebastian, Delphine, and Delphine’s partner Kenny. He is also survived by his grandchildren Angelica, Donovan, Dominic, Gabriel and Seraphina. Robertson recently completed his fourteenth film music project with frequent collaborator Martin Scorsese, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon.’ In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Six Nations of the Grand River to support a new Woodland Cultural Center.”
He is best known for the classic songs he wrote for the Band, including “The Weight,” “Up on Cripple Creek,” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” “The Shape I’m In” and “It Makes No Difference.” His story with The Band was captured in the 2019 documentary “Once Were Brothers.“

The Weight is a deathbed playlist song for me. This is a bummer.

My girlfriend's mother, and her nephew, and nephew's friend came and visited us last weekend. Her nephew and friend are 20, and I hadn't spent any quality time with dudes that age while I've been in my 30s. They are into skateboarding, acting wild, cutting up constantly, pussy, etc-like 20 year old dudes are into. Good kids, but it was a trip. They aren't as diverse and seasoned in their musical interests as me, still trying to figure out what they like, are still susceptible to the trappings of pop music and all that.
Anyway, we were cooking dinner, and I told them to pick out a record from my collection to listen to. They asked if I had any of The Band, specifically The Weight. I pulled out Rock of Ages, and they were all excited that I had it, and I put it on for them. We were drinking, and we all belted out the whole song in great fervor. It was a fun moment.
Then on Sunday before they left, I pulled out the guitar and was playing some songs, and I played The Weight, and we all belted it out again.
Good times.
Thanks for the music Robbie.

Nice Bruce Springsteen quote.
The song “Atlantic City” was recorded by The Band … when they reunited without Robbie
Good song though

RIP.
He was a dick to the rest the band… but still a hell of a talent.

When I get off of this mountain You know where I wanna go?
Straight down the Mississippi River To the Gulf of Mexico To Lake Charles, Louisiana Little Bessie, girl that I once knew
And she told me just to come on by If there's anything she could do

Bruce wrote it.
Levon sang it.
But it certainly is a great send-off song.

Bob Dylan and the Band is some of my favorite occasional listening. The Basement tapes from Big Pink are underrated, IMO. Some interesting stuff came out of those times.

Who would have thought a Canadian would pen the best Civil War song I can think of? I may have to give it a listen later. It's been awhile.
RIP RR
