I was flipping through HBO Max and came across this recnetly and decieded to dive in. The only 2 things I knew about this show prior to starting were that it was about a family running a funeral home, and that it is considered to have one of hte best series finales of all time. Looking at the air dates this was on HBO right in the time of The Wire, Sopranos, Sex and the City, Oz, Entourage, etc so I guess it'd be easy to get lost in the shuffle.
Teh first episode was a bit of a slog to get through. It was kinda slow, I really disliked the acting of several of the characters, and it just seemed kinda hokey. Some of those things have improved and I'm now at the point where I'm a bit more invested and looking forward to keeping going. I'm only about 5 episodes in right now so obviously VERY early in the series, but I'm liking it.
My ultimate quesiton is, how great is this show overall and where woudl you rank it with some of the other great shows of the time? Again, PLEASE no spoilers because I really want to get through the whole series unspoiled.

I've never watched the show, but did watch the end of the finale when it was such a big deal after it aired. And honestly it was pretty cool, even having not watched a single second of the show. I imagine had I watched the whole show I would've absolutely loved it.
Sorry if my response isn't more helpful.

Better than SATC and Entourage.
Not as good as Sopranos, The Wire or Oz.
Solid show.

This is my wife's favorite show so I have watched it and rewatched it a lot. I think it is very good but below the truly great shows like the Sopranos. A lot of the characters are shitty people, that can be hard for some to watch. There are also some very fun characters and moments.

I loved it. It was a great companion show to the Sopranos, in that it was so different.

You get to see Dexter get plowed by dudes, what's not to like?
On a serious note, good show, worth watching.

Honestly one of the best shows of all time. The characters were brutally real people and most of them were self destructive, despite being good people, which made you root for them and feel their pain of failure. You always knew someone like one of the characters and so you really could identify with the pain and struggle.

I really enjoyed the series. Very well written.
One of my favorite games to play, especially later in the series, was to guess who was the one who would die in the opening scene because they would use some misdirection.
Favorite death was the woman celebrating her divorce who got clocked by the traffic light while standing through the moon roof of the limo.

It was one of my favorite shows at the time it was airing. There were a few characters & actors that annoyed me though. It’s been years since I’ve seen an episode so not sure how well it holds up.

It’s a Top 10 show for me. It also wraps the show up in one of the most beautifully written finales.
It has its moments where it waxes and wanes but has a good payoff.

Great show, even greater finale. Probably the GOAT finale.

I thought the show was good, not 5 stars like BB or The Americans but a solid 3.5-4 out of 5, but the series finale is the best I've seen. It was just remarkably well conceived and brilliantly handled. I was absolutely spellbound for ten minutes, and that rarely happens with me.

Has anybody seen my "Ski Iraq" shirt?

its not the S tier of hbo shows but solid A tier. its pretty good most of the way through but does have some points where it falters.
its probably one of my favorites of the HBO list.
grander scheme of things outside of HBO. a very good choice to watch and memorable, but i wouldn't put it on a "must watch" list. i will say though if you stick through it and like the characters the finale hits hard and might be one of the most satisfying pay offs of time invested into a show.

Thanks all. I'm abotu 6 or 7 eps into Season 1 now. It's picking up a little bit storywise so I'm in it for a while. Honestly even if it does falter and I do lose interest, I have a feeling I'm going ot force myself to watch the entire series just so i can experience the finale ha.

I'm almost finished doing a rewatch of this series. I absolutely loved it the first time around. The rewatch hasn't been nearly as satisfying. Still a very strong top 10 show for me, though.

I personally think the "greatness" of the finale is way overstated on this board. If expecting some huge payoff in the final episode is what's going to power you through 5 seasons even though you're not really enjoying it, I do not recommend.
