Is it better to heat food at a lower setting for a longer time in a microwave oven?

Or faster at a higher temp setting?

I argue this with my wife. She always uses high setting. I use low and slow.

Like with a leftover, nice, medium rare steak. I slice out thin, lay out the strips in a microwave safe paper tray or paper plate and I set the microwave to level 2 for about 4-5 minutes. She'll set it to High and cook in 2 minutes. Mine comes out warm and still medium rare. Hers will be gray and hot.

Of course, she also does the same cooking eggs on the stove and burns them. Every time.

I usually do low and slow, give me 3 minutes at 60% over 1 minute at 100%

I don’t know how many times I had mentioned to the young ones here to go with low and slow for better results. Glad to see you write this post. And, the device was basically ignored because they wanted to hurry the process.

Kudos to you.

Why not just use the oven?

Lower setting for longer for most things. I would rather eat leftover steak cold. To me, microwaving leftover proteins totally changes the flavor profile.

I prefer to use the toaster oven for something like that. I always use high setting in the microwave.

Like most everything it depends. A big bowl of soup I heat on high and it is fine, meat I tend to do longer at a lower power setting.

I don't reheat a good steak in the microwave though, I let it temper then throw it in a hot pan with some butter and rosemary and baste it for a couple of minutes. Using a microwave is blasphemy.

My wife gives new meaning to the idea of “nuking” something in the microwave. I go slow and low

She’s good with the oven and air fryer though so I won’t complain

I tend to do low and slow and rearrange or stir occasionally. But I would never reheat steak in the microwave. I use the toaster oven for that.

You should try re-heating that on a cast iron. Throw some butter in there to melt and heat your steak up that way. Very tasty!

A whole steak? Of course not. Strips for a steak sandwich or salad? It works great at a very low setting.

I usually just use the defrost function to warm up things like steak that I don't want totally nuked.
