Every single person on a football scholarship in the SEC has talent
This is a great point. Every player was the best player in his state for his graduation year at his position with a few exceptions. I'm going to age myself, but Michael Burks was the single greatest athlete I've ever personally played against: football, basketball, whatever. At 7 years old he would do standing backflips in his football pads at the playground. He was Mr. Biddy for the whole Biddy Basketball association at age 12; iirc his JPRD Eastbank team won the national Biddy championship. He kicked arse at Rummel for 4 years.
Then he washed out after 1 season at Auburn and flunked off of Tulane and disappeared into the ether.

Uncommon talent becomes more common each step up the ladder.

He’s pretty slow for a corner. A good ball hawk though….maybe should consider a move to safety

Today is cut day in the NFL but the local Philly sportswriters think Ricks makes the team. Below is from the Philadelphia Inquirer on their 53 man projection (here's the LINK but it's a paywall):

Cornerbacks (6): Darius Slay, James Bradberry, Avonte Maddox, Josh Jobe, Kelee Ringo, Eli Ricks.

Cut: Mekhi Garner, Mario Goodrich, Josiah Scott.

Injured reserve: Zech McPhearson.

Practice squad: Goodrich, Garner.

Roseman loves stashing young, undrafted corners on the 53, and Ricks qualifies as this year’s version. He’s outplayed Ringo, who was drafted in the fourth round. McPhearson was being groomed to back up Maddox in the slot, but an Achilles tendon rupture ended his season. Goodrich was promoted in his place, but he hasn’t earned his way onto the roster, and if the Eagles need a slot, they can call him up from the practice squad on Saturdays.

Wouldn't be bragging Denver Harris looks to be well on his way to sitting on this list for the next one.

Will be many more like him. Only difference they will be walking away with NIL millions for being a bust in college. There are kids now making a million or more before even playing a down of college ball and it's all ok'd by Ncaa now

Is that different than high NFL draft choices, JR, from getting the money and quitting?
Nobody is forcing businesses/individuals to pay NIL.

Made the 53 roster

quote:

Howie Roseman on Eli Ricks making the #Eagles roster: "You talk about pedigree, he was the #1 CB in the country coming out of HS and going to LSU. He didn't have the last season there he wanted to, but we spent a lot of time on him in the draft process.. His work ethic and care factor are really high. He's a great success story. As a guy who thought he'd be a high pick, he came in here with the right attitude. He kept working and kept improving.. As we tell all these young players, "there's no scholarships in the NFL."

I wouldn't call a 5 star all american corner getting progressively worse over his college career and going undrafted, then dropping so far as a prospect that him making the 53 man roster is news, as a "great success story"

I can’t believe Mekhi Garner didn’t make the roster. I thought he’d be a 2 deep corner for years.

It’s fun to make fun of Eli Ricks, but he did make a Philly roster that cut Greedy Williams & Mekhi Garner

The posts on the first two pages of this thread are not aging well. And you know that they see this thread getting bumped.

I remember when he transferred to Alabama because Tide fans were running their mouth non-stop about how he wanted to come play for a winner and was going to be a starter Day 1.

Well, let's just say, all that trash talking didn't last long. After Ricks showed he had no work ethic, Alabama fans quickly shut their mouth and realized they got the short end of the stick!

When is it ever ok to laugh at a kid’s failure?

I can answer this. When a kid picks up a shoe for no good reason at the end of a game and hurls it 25 yards downfield, costing his team the game.

That’s hilariously stupid. I laughed my arse off. And you did too.

Did they mention that self-absorbed dropping of the ball before crossing the goal line on that pic?

Cutting Greedy and Garner while keeping Ricks is one of the dumbest moves I’ve ever seen a professional franchise make.

Ricks played exceptionally well in the preseason. What a terrible take.

I see Josh Jobe on there too. That dude is a freaking headcase also.

Fool’s gold remains so irresistible…

Guys like Garner and especially Greedy have proven themselves against elite competition in actual games. But every coach thinks he can distill the raw talent from a headcase. See Gilbert, Arik.

The level of blind homerism on this board still surprises me sometimes
