re: Congratulations to Eli Ricks

Eli also took advantage of LSU paying for his surgery and leaving after he had it.

Great example of how recruiting and NIL can hurt athletes. They are told from middle school onward that they are elite. They are surrounded by sycophants that enable laziness and poor behavior. The ones that succeed are kept well aware that there are many elite athletes out there bagging groceries. Work is what brings the elite into greatness.

His transfer was shocking in every imaginable way. Preseason All-American, a two year starter, and far and away the best lockdown corner on the roster. He could've been average last season with us and made 1st round money with a decent combine.
He transferred to Bama 2 weeks after Kelly was hired and was reportedly in the portal before that. The ONLY thing that could possibly have been in play there is Kelly told him he didn't want his attitude (highly unlikely in one meeting, even if there was a meeting) or Kelly told him he was going to play more zone and Ricks wanted to be a man corner. Again, highly unlikely as Denbrock wasn't hired at that point. Regardless, he is the only transfer in LSU history that I was full on pissed off about and pleased that he failed.

Ricks was never the most athletic corner he wasn’t close to Derek Stingley as an athlete. He was instinctual and had plus length.

My favorite play of the year.
Koy Moore throwing an INT was special too

his still pinned tweet from 6/2022 is "My best football is still ahead of me"

LOL Every one shitting on Ricks, which I approve of. Remember Denver Harris? You know the 5* CB that chose 8&4 over us and transferred to us this year. He isn’t exactly setting the world on fire. So we don’t exactly have any room to bash Little Nicky on this issue. But I’m sure I’ll get bashed over this factual comment not an opinion.

Eli Ricks was destined to be a cautionary tale. The family turned the kid into a youth sports myth before he ever hit campus. Mater Dei, then IMG Academy, LSU, playing Ohio State against everybody, NIL nonsense, the constant PR push from the mom, then the Alabama move.
You do all that crap, and yet there’s always some 2 star from New Iberia or St James parish or Ruston who is just as fast, just as skilled, and who wants it more.

Different situation completely. LSU is giving Denver a 2nd chance on a big stage after he blew it at A&M due to off-field shenanigans. He may be a head-case and blow it here too, but that wouldn't be much of a surprise. Ricks was a bona fide star cruising to the 1st round at LSU, bailed to Bama for NIL money, and lost millions.

Well…this thread didn’t age well. Looks like ole Eli has been killing it in the preseason and has got him a roster spot with the Eagles.

that moment when JD looks over and takes his foot off the gas, drops his left arm and coasts into the end zone - instant classic. What a subtle way to look like a boss.

Another example of why the majority of Ranters are posing their opinions and not talent scouts.

To see LSU players mauling the entire right side of Bama's defense like that was amazing.
This play, and a lot of similar ones, is why I say that this isn’t the Bama of the 2010’s. Bama is a soft finesse team now.

Nothing wrong with that. He got hurt playing for LSU, right?

Nope.

Ricks thought he was going to coast through last year without playing and
get drafted high based on his talent the same way Stingley did. Problem is
Nick pushed him in the lineup and his total lack of preparation showed. This really exposed character issues that weren’t there for Stingley.
The talent is still there so I’m sure if he puts in the work he’ll be successful.
His and/or his families plan to not get hurt last year cost him millions

At the end of 2020, who would have believed Ricks and Boutte would be battling for a 53 man roster spot as rookies?
Posted on 8/27/23 at 4:30 pm to JimTiger72
Boutte quit on LSU multiple times. He cost us the FSU game because he had mentally checked out. But yeah, Ricks is worse.
This is what O was recruiting at the end. He was so desperate to Chase Stars that he stopped vetting players.
