The dollar really doesn’t go as far as it used to.

The average American feels they need to rake in $233,000 annually to live in financial comfort, according to a new survey by YouGov for Bankrate that polled over 2,500 people. That’s 310% more than the 2021 paycheck for the average full-time worker—$75,203, per the Census Bureau. And they think they need to earn twice that to feel wealthy—$483,000.

I remember 10 years ago thinking “if I can just make it to 100k, I’ll be good.” Now I make more than that and I feel like I never have any money

Life style inflation is a hell of a drug.

How is "comfortable" and "rich" being defined? This is meaningless otherwise.

Also $233K to be comfortable is frickin laughable. You can live a great life on far less.

You can be comfortable on a lot less than a quarter of a million. For some reason, I think people are starting to forget just how much money that is in comparison with their peers.

Including the obviously expensive places (DC, San Fran, ect) that still puts a household in the top 7-5% in America.

To be honest, there was a time where i thought of i made 100,000 that i would be making it rain and could do just about anything i wanted.

After taxes and any other little deduction, each check really doesn’t have that much left in it. You can live ok but it’s not anywhere near what i thought it would be

I would rather have far less government and keep the nearly 50% of my paycheck that they steal.

Noone pays 50% effective tax rates outside of high earners in CA or NYC.

Fix your withholding.

Price of everything goes up exponentially and wages stagnate. We live in an awesome country.

$233k doesn't go that far after taxes, mortgage, car payt, car ins, cell phone bills, travel ball, maybe a vacation, investment savings & summer camp for 2 kids.... nothing excessive than your neighbors

I remember back in the day when I first crossed the $200k threshold and thought I was rich. I was far from it. I honestly don’t know how young people today can afford to live on less than that.

I’m guessing they’re piling up debt trying to be the Joneses.
