Shell's renewables boss to leave after CEO strategy shift

Brostrom joined Shell from offshore wind giant Orsted in August 2021 to head offshore wind as the company planned to rapidly grow its wind and solar operations as part of a strategy to cut greenhouse gas emissions under previous CEO Ben van Beurden.
Brostrom quickly became head of renewables in February 2022 after Elisabeth Brinton stepped down less than two years after taking the reins.
Chief Executive Sawan, who took office in January, announced on June 14 a shift back to oil and gas production while paring back investments in renewables following investor pressure to focus on the most profitable businesses.
Sawan also introduced a new structure to the company's top leadership that eliminated Brostrom's role and split it into regions.
"Thomas Brostrøm has elected to leave Shell to pursue an external opportunity," the company said.
He will be succeeded by Greg Joiner, currently VP Shell Energy Australia, as head Shell Energy Europe and Emerging Markets Power. Ajay Shah will lead renewable generation in Asia while Mike Parker will head offshore wind engineering.

BP started moving in this more common sense direction in January. Shell had to follow since Chevron, Exxon, and now BP have been kicking their arse with less of a focus on the unicorn fart business model.

Probably a combination of the company not focusing as much on renewables and Wail wanting to reduce the size of the executive level management team to simply things a little.

Had plenty of those types show up at their annual shareholder meeting last month.
I still can’t wrap my head around how these people think.
The world still needs energy badly. The green movement can’t provide what we need yet.
There isn’t enough money in the world to make a total switch to renewable energy anytime soon.
They want people to suffer by paying stupid high prices for anything energy related. They must want people to starve and/or freeze to death.

Shell could increase profits if there was ever an (outside sourced) honest assessment of job roles and responsibilities. If you go into the place, there’s so many people in offices and cubicles doing absolutely nothing. So many made up jobs. During COVID, the plants were down to skeleton crews and a handful of staff working off-site. All the nonessential jobs were not contributing. The places ran just fine and still made record profits. The people that were staffed on site during COVID say it’s the best the place ever ran and things like morale and work ethic was higher than it had been in many years.

I'm appalled by the way young college graduates regard history.
I work in engineering and during infrequent downtimes I like to discuss the growth of technology and the few new kids we have hired just roll their eyes and have said that none of this is important and that their ideas are better and the only things that should count.
I counter that if the steam engine had not been invented we would not have electricity and refrigeration. Without optics we could have never cured many of the diseases that have plagued humanity since the beginning of civilization.
They have been taught that none of this is important. Malthus would be proud.
Without petrochemicals millions would be dead.
The disdain and disrespect of History from our younger generations is very troubling and down right dangerous.
This will needlessly kill people and is tantamount to genocide.

That's kind of a simpleton view. The profit boom that these refiners, etc experienced during the back end of the covid era was less about labor rate decreases and almost all about micro economic factors that were in place. The spreads and set up was unreal.
And they weren't doing any major maintenance/turnarounds or executing new projects, so of course the staffing was at bare minimums. You can't run like that for extended periods of time.
But yes, some jobs probably are redundant and could be eliminated.

There isn't enough copper in the world either to make the transition to any semblance of renewable energy either. Luckily, the world will run out of copper a lot sooner than (American taxpayer) money.
You already can't get single and 3-phase transformers now for residential electrical service because solar panels require so many metals, if we electrify like the Greens really want, there isn't enough copper available to be mined in all the earth.

That’s because their strategy is garbage. The returns are solid and predictable if you don’t let everyone dilute you before you get involved. All the majors have similar issues.

It’s not tantamount to genocide…or to larceny, rape, or even white supremacy. All those words mean something, and none of them mean “disrespecting history”.
