Probably the Peppers just based on longevity and popularity.

RAtM will forever be the kings of hypocrisy for telling fans "If you aint vaccinated, you're not welcome at our shows". This after making their living off of promoting "F the man and the system, I aint following your rules and don't be a follower"

Has to be in the all time greatest of ironies'...

(Maybe it was just Zac the balls sack and not the whole band but he's the face of the band and no one really corrected him.... sooooo....)

Commies recording on Sony, touring with U2 and living in big houses. They were always full of shite. Most rock bands are, but few as preachy.

AIC is the best
Tool probably has the largest cult following

Commercial success would be RHCP though

Rage was cool for about 5 minutes then proceeded to suck

That tends to happen when Morello makes you a one trick pony.

Easily Alice In Chains from that list.

Alice and Tool stand above both.

Rage back in the day was groundbreaking but that mix just doesn't work anymore.

Peppers have always been to cutesy for me.

Layne Staley died over 20 years ago. If AIC is the most legendary of this group, it's in the same way Hendrix was legendary in his generation.

I saw all of these bands in their prime, and I think I'd have to throw my vote to RHCP if we're talking about "legend". I think much of the love of AIC here is more "mythology".

From a pure performance point of view, and again I saw these band in their prime in the 1990's (without the lens of what has happened in the 30 years since then), I'd say it was RHCP, Rage, AIC and then Tool. While I know Tool has a huge following of loyal fans, their show live was, frankly, boring.

With all that being said, NONE of them hold a candle to Ministry live.

AIC

RHCP (while I don't like anything after BSSM, their popularity is undeniable)

In terms of answering OP's question, to me:

1) RHCP
2) Tool
3) Alice in Chains
4) Rage

I base this pretty much by popularity/longevity too. Not necessarily based on who I like or who is better.

RHCP and Rage have some very similar songs where they take a line/lyric and riff and just beat it to a bloody dead overplayed pulp over three minutes

AIC and Tool

RHCP has some great tunes, but have long since fizzled

Rage is garbage
