34 with 3 kids. We have spanked.

I don't have to spank my oldest. He is well behaved, listens when corrected, and the few times he doesn't the shame he feels when we fuss at him is more than enough. He had a few spankings when he was younger but just doesn't need it anymore.

My 2nd is hard headed and needs some correction. I haven't had to spank in a while (my wife has a time or 2 lately though) but the 3-4 age range for him was the worst. He could be a real turd. He still can be but he has actually responded better lately to going to bed early or us letting his older brother have control over the remote for their TV time in the evening.

My daughter is 2. Haven't spanked but started timeout. She likes to push things and test us. She will probably be a lot like her middle brother.

In my later 40s and never spanked my kids.

Kids need discipline. They don’t NEED spanking. Although there is nothing inherently wrong with spanking.

Just like discipline can come in other forms, spanking doesn’t necessarily result in effective discipline.

Spanking can be effective

No it can't, in any form.

It doesnt work on it's own and in combination with something else it only lessens the effectiveness of other involvement.

It's lazy violence in a desperate attempt to hold on to power.

Any disciplined instilled into someone that is or was spanked was done it spite of being beaten, not because of it.

I think it's an interesting question. Most people nowadays will say that if an adult needs to use violence to get an adult to respect them, then they aren't worthy of respect. Setting aside whether this is true or not, why would it be more acceptable to use violence on a child?

spanking in necessary, if nothing else is working.
You can make arguments for spankings or being against spanking.

But you cannot logically make the argument that spanking is sometimes "necessary"

That's silly.

If one quite literally can't get a handle on their kid any other way thank spanking them, then that's a solid sign of a pretty shitty parent.

I think it's too much time spent alone and neglected. Whatever online group they find first becomes their identity (sex/gender the big one now like you mentioned).

I used what was effective. For my younger son, that was a difficult journey of discovery. It’s fairly easy to determine if spanking is going to work for an individual child. If it does, you probably only have to do it once or twice. Parenthood without the parent having the power would be torture. It’s a necessity, imo.

Your premise is dumb as hell. A pop on the leg isn’t “violence.”
