New car vs getting new truck

My truck is totaled from an accident, and I'm getting $25k from the insurance company after my loan is paid off. I'm thinking of doing the financially responsible thing and get a car instead another truck and not have a note. I have two kids, and we take a road trips every once in a while. I also have an hour commute to/from work.
What make/model cars would you recommend: Honda, Toyota, Nissan, ?

Just get a Honda accord with a V6 and call it a day

This. With that commute you have it makes the most sense. Rent or borrow a truck if you ever need one to really do truck things.
Trucks(both new and used) are stupid expensive

If you’re talking about doing the “responsible” thing in regards to kids and not having a note, get a used Odyssey and drive it till the wheels fall off. A car is not necessarily the responsible thing in regards to kids and you’re not going to get much of a new car for $25k. If it’s a gas mileage thing just say so.

Test drive a Camry and an Accord, buy the one you prefer. Agreed on the 6 cylinder. Highlanders are great vehicles if you want an SUV. Or, get a used Lexus ES350 that's a few years old.

Meh. Trucks and mid sized sedans are perfectly fine for kids.

Do you "need" a truck?
If not, then get a car and rent a more vacation friendly vehicle for road trips if needed.
Sadly, $25k will not get you a dependable full sized truck these days.

Not of the $25k variety.

I've been driving a 2018 Toyota Camry XSE for the last 5 years and have had zero issues.
I have the V4 engine for gas milage. (30mpg/40mpg). It's a great car and the XSE is a nice sporty look for a 4dr sedan.
Will very comfortably fit two adults in the front and 2-3 kids in the back.

I've had my 2014 Honda Accord Sport since new in 2014 and it's been nothing but awesome. Has the four cylinder and thats all you need, plenty of pep in it when needed but cruising on interstate can easily get mid 30s MPG. It's a very big, comfortable reliable car. I have 90k miles on mine and havent had a single repair done to it.
If your commute is more stop-go I would consider a hybrid accord, they crush it in MPG in stop-go situation (mid-high 40s MPG is easy).
You could get a really mint condition low mileage high trim level (Touring) model from my generation Accord (2013-2017) for $20k-$25k or also still a very nice probably still mid-high trim level (EX-L,Touring) 2018-2021-ish for $25k probably.
I definitely prefer my naturally aspirated four cylinder to the newer turbo fours they've been using. The hybrid is a good powertrain in either of those generations.
But yeah, ditch the truck and crappy MPG and get something like the above if you're spending 2 hours in the car every day.

What about one of those Honda trucks?

If I had a family and was trying to be practical with my choice, this is the advice I’d go with. They’re both affordable grocery-getters, get decent gas mileage and are uber reliable (used or new).

Trucks are grossly over priced

Honda or Toyota. Any vehicle you like and can afford

hard to argue.

Hell no.
Check out the Mazda 3 too. I believe you can get one that's not a turbo, has a traditional automatic (can get a stick in the hatch), and NO CVTs.
