Thoughts on dogs from shelters

Would appreciate opinions. Have had 2 pure bred black Labs, loved "em a whole bunch. Interested in mixed breed for next dog mainly due to less risk of genetic problems of pure breeding. Any thoughts on obtaining a dog from a shelter and perhaps any particular shelters in La.? I remember my brother (since deceased) telling me a shelter in Lake Charles or Lafayette was a good one to find a dog. Thanks for your help.

Got a rescue dog. He was the goodest boy. Zero complaints. You’ll love ‘em just the same and they’ll love you even more because they know they came from shite.

I adopted my dog for $35 from the pound back in 2015. He was the best dog I've ever had. Just recently had to put him down though unfortunately.

“Mixed breed” commonly means pit bull.
As long as you don’t get one with pit in it you’re good.

Mutts are awesome from my experience

I've had a breeder dog and a rescue and they were both good in their own way. Rescues may start out a little more tough to train, and aren't always the size they tell you they will be, but mine has been healthy as hell throughout it's entire life so far.

About to get a bunch of responses stating the same thing. I’ve had several great dogs. A couple of pure breeds, a couple found on the street, and a couple from shelters. The street dogs and shelter dogs can’t be beat.

That’s always the toughest part of dog ownership. Thoughts and prayers. There’s another great dog waiting for you at a local shelter when you’re ready.

As the owner of a black lab that I bought and love very much, I advocate for people to please adopt. Shelter dogs are the best, and they don’t have the same medical issues as pure breds.
I love my lab and will miss him terribly when he’s gone (he’s 13) but I’ll always adopt moving forward.

Rescue dogs are always scarred and they'll have some annoying flaw (scared of men, food aggression, incessant barking, etc) that's nearly impossible to fix.
I'll only consider #purebloods (like me) or designer breeds from champion bloodlines and boutique breeders

Hard to explain the gratitude in their eyes. It sometimes takes a few days to develop the bond because they have gone through so much but I have had many- usually 2-3 at a time and I wouldn't change a thing.

It is hit or miss dude. Go look at the dogs when you are ready to adopt. Find one that is happy to see you and not afraid, make sure it doesn't look like a pitbull mix. Sometimes and nicest dogs at the pound are great, but they don't work good with other dogs once home etc. Like we had a rescue that was super loving but around food he was a psycho that could snap and attack our other dog at any time.

This is all a lie.
I've got 2 rescue dogs. Jack Russell mix and a dachshund mix. They're both sweet as can be and have no issues.

Mutts/mixed are the best by far. Go adopt and give a dog a good home

it's a crap shoot, just like any pet, lost count of how many we've "rescued," the only thing I can say with 100% certainty is dogs >>> cats by a long shot

My current dog is from a shelter and is the best dog I’ve ever had. 11 years in. No health issues and has an absolutely iron stomach. Can eat anything with zero issues. Looks like a blue heeler just smaller, likely some breeder mixing with rat terrier trying to make smaller versions. Especially with young kids I wouldn’t want a dog over 50 pounds from a shelter because it will assuredly have pit and/or chow in it.
My wife of nearly 10 years is 99.9% purebred ashkenazi, constantly yaps and has a sensitive stomach.
So there are some real perks to mixed breed companions.

I’ve had my pound rescue for 6 years and she’s been incredible. Best $20 I’ve ever spent.

Every dog is an individual. Where they come from might not matter.
We had two rescue dogs. 1 was sweet as could be at the pound, then turned into Cujo at home. The other one tried to bite me at the pound but once home was the sweetest dog ever.

This is also wrong, but the one I replied to literally said that all rescue dogs are scarred.
My 2 rescue dogs have no issues. They're great pets.
My rescue cat is even better. Sweetest animal I've ever seen.
