I bought some no name charcoal like I usually do from the closest store. I last used Royal Oak and it started like a champ. This no name stuff takes forever to light! Who knew it made a difference, it looks the same?

Get you a chimney starter and some of them tumbleweed things and you could light a pair of wet drawers if you needed to

Damn your Dad didn’t take you outside and make you light the grill every time from the time you were about 12 until you could do it reliably?

When you can't get it started, take a piece of paper, roll it up, light it and put it on the coals. Its a little trick I learned it in the Korean Conflict.

Stop cooking with sawdust nuggets and get some real word, or at worst some lump.

Just swallow your pride and switch to gas. I did about 10 years ago and I learned that I much rather convenience than charcoal flavor.
If I really want smoke flavor, I have a Traeger pellet smoker, which is also convenient cause all you do is plug it in and leave it alone.

I bought some of that Walmart charcoal and I could barely get it lit using a bunch of lighter fluid and a weed blower. Then when I would check later after it all should burned out there would be unburned briquettes in the ashes. I will stick to the brand names too

A friend's mom told us when we were teenagers that you never want to skimp on the fire when you spend a lot on good meat to cook. That stuck with me. Buy good meat and quality coal, and use plenty. If you're going to do it, do it right.
