The country and world deserve it for their out of control behavior.
This is equivalent to the enabling parent who keeps bailing out their drug addiction son.
Consequences are important. You can't get change until real consequences happen. Our country is soft and fat, because the powers that be, have insulated them from the consequences of their behavior behind the scenes.

Beyond Trump, what do you think of McCarthy?

Personally I thought he was doing a better than expected job until now.
The debt ceiling deal is about what I expected from him and its what we got.

Out of control spending is where the Uniparty always join hands to screw the middle class.....been going on for decades. In 1972 the federal debt was $450 billion.....in 2023 it's $32 trillion.

Your expectations are simply unrealistic. It would be like saying the QB of your favorite team should have just jumped over the defense. That foolishness ignores that it is impossible.
McCarthy and the Republicans did not get much for their threat to not fund the government, but that’s because they didn’t have much power.
Are you familiar with BATNA? It’s the Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement. The Republicans’ BATNA was that the Government runs out of funding and the President has to shut down parts of the government. He would choose things that hurt the most people, and he would blame Republicans. This has been proven to work again and again. The Republicans would lose control of the House in the next election.
Does that sound effective to you? So they had to have a negotiated agreement, just as Biden did. BATNA wasn’t great for him, either. The Republicans got a decent deal.
If you want more austere fiscal policy then you must elect those type of Republicans. Trump damn sure isn’t one of them. Like Bill Clinton, Trump benefited by the heavy lifting done by the previous (two) administrations.
That is your opinion. Another is allow the shut down and go on the offensive pushing back against Democrats. Be vocal and loud, telling Americans what Biden will do and calling him out. Republicans COULD resist and be successful, but they won't and it isn't due to some honorable or intelligent acronym (BATNA), it's simply a lack of courage and self preservation.
What some don't understand is that nothing changes if nothing changes. Usually meaningful change doesn't happen without a fight, the resistance must overcome and that doesn't happen by continuing to give up. This only prolongs the inevitable. Sometimes people have to stand up and fight or continue to be preyed upon.

There are two realities about the debt ceiling debate everyone keeps missing.
1) If it were to go long enough to disrupt bond payments, it would create a massive global economic disruption. This isn’t a loan you refuse to pay to China- these are US bonds held by just about every entity in the world with money.
2) The Dems would lay this at he republicans feet and with the help of the MSM it would be a Republican problem.
The time to deal with spending is when the money is spent not when the bill is due. We’ve seen this happen a dozen times.
I agree with what you said, but the problem with the bolded part is that while we have seen this happen a dozen times, the outcome is the same and nothing changes..

It will take a near-complete economic collapse before any meaningful change occurs.

Why does a government that already wastes our money need to grow? How is that an acceptable position for anyone claiming to be a conservative, especially one in a “leadership” role.
Posted on 5/31/23 at 8:59 am to Lsut81
He needs to. That deal is pathetic. All he had to do was hold the line on pre-covid spending and taking the IRS money back. He couldn't even do that.
What wins did he actually get for the Republican base?

I agree with your sentiment but this would have a hige impact on every entity that holds money…..from your local bank to your retirement account to pension funds…to insurance companies…to every global company….to foreign countries…etc.
Republicans don’t want to be responsible for destroying the world economy. They know it….we know it. They same crooks in DC acting tough now won’t touch defense, entitlement or discretionary spending with a 10 foot pole during budget votes….when the debt really matters.
I don’t know what the solution is but crashing the treasury market isn’t it.

Any politician that thinks government needs to grow is a clown. Even minimal shrinkage is not good enough.
We need massive slicing of government at all levels.

Jesus! I don't really know, but it seems to me that it could have horrific wealth-destroying consequences. Would you be hurt if the stock market lost 70% of it's value? Would it? Maybe.

It’s because trump wants it.
Never mind trump is an insulated billionaire that guy probably shops at the bargain bins.

Yeah, let's crash and burn with Dems. Then they can install the right form of communism and we won't have to worry about elections anymore.

run against them seems to be the only way.

Less that half of the Federal Government is anything approaching essential. We should just see a hiring freeze and then shift around employees to fill essential gaps from non-essential positions.
NY's last Republican Governor did that and it trimmed the intractable and un-trimmable without a lot of drama.
