If a person you consider a friend for 30 years gets mad at you for not giving him money because him and his wife have no self control then he isnt a friend at all.

A friend is someone who shares in success as well as failure. Its funny how "friends" start coming around when they need something.

I haven't read all the other stuff so I'm sure someone said this, but if this friend is going to you for money without selling his stuff or going to family first, then this friend needs the money for something he doesn't want the rest of the family to find out about.

I said I would only consider helping him if he helps himself first and shows me he is cutting back, selling some stuff. He gets kinda angry at this point like Im accusing him of something. Calms down and we just kinda end it. Hope I didnt lose a friend.

This is an allegory to the current debt ceiling drama even if you didn't mean it to be.

Unless he's a fisherman by trade, this is where I draw the line. To continue the analogy, he doesn't have a revenue problem, he has a spending problem. You should persist with his lifestyle changes. It will help him more than the money you give him.

Agree with this.

If money is involved its better to give with no expectation to get back rather than loaning.

The majority of people are irresponsible.

This thread reminds me I still need to payback my brother the $250 I borrowed from him nearly 30 years ago to buy books for my last semester at LSU.

ETA: I hope he doesn't read this and hit me up for it.

This person doesn't need to borrow money.

Tell him to go see a banker. A local experienced banker at a community bank. He will get financial guidance and counseling with no obligation to open any accounts.

*tell me what city and I’ll find you one

There’s a ton of fat to trim here before I would start loaning money, I certainly don’t think you were unreasonable.

It’s an unfortunate situation many people across the country are going to be facing soon. The writing has been on the wall and people have consistently ignored it.

Love the guy and his wife but will admit they are the classic 80-90k millionaires that the OT talks about. He drives a new f150. She drives a 2 year old Yukon XL. Insurance premiums now going up. Other bills going up. Salary isnt.

It sucks because I think its coming for a lot of people in that income range.

Sounds like I'm gonna get a great deal on my next truck/SUV.

Seriously wonder what all these people were thinking stretching themselves so thin when everything was so cheap to finance, it was always going to snap back the other direction.

Now with rates going up these things are getting harder to sell and people are having to sell them for less since most folks only care about the payments.

I made the decision a long time ago to never, ever loan money to a friend or family member. If they’re in need, give them what you’re able to afford and never ask for the money back. Having a loan out on a family member or friend makes Thanksgiving dinner with them taste a whole lot different. Never do it. Give what you can give and never ask for it back.

Yeah don't feel sorry for people in that position. My wife decided to stop working to stay home with the kids so we sold our vehicle that had a payment, bought something with cash, I sold my personal vehicle (have work vehicle), and we eat out once a month/cut cable out. You can either choose to struggle or make the changes necessary to not.
