It’s weird. Some of the best movies in the series are the worst adaptations
It depends on which camp you're in, I watched the movies first before reading the books (Audible) and Goblet of Fire is my favorite even though it was a horrible adaptation.

Did anyone actually read the story?
It is with JK Rowling as Executive Producer. She is behind the whole thing. She gets to get the cast of her choice (and kick to the curb the ones who have turned on her in my opinion).
She gets to tell the whole story this time - over ten years.
Good for her.

I don’t see how they are going to do a series off the books. I have read the books and seen the movies. Enjoyed them both. The first few books ( movies) are aimed for kids. Not until Goblet does it start to get older and darker ( more interesting).
Just don’t see how an audience will wait a week to see what happens next when the material has been out for nearly 20 years.
Would be like Disney+ making a series for the Star Wars OT with a new Han, Luke, and Leia. No thank you.

I mean, there’s diehard Potterheads out there that will support it and make it worth it for HBO. But you can really make the argument as to why people would show up for a lot of media.
LOTR has been out for ages. Why would anyone want to go watch that in theaters? Why would anyone want to watch the original HP movies? Why would people want to watch the MCU when they’re based on stories that have already happened decades before. I think it’s too soon but I think this was inevitable. If the series had come out 5-10 years ago, the movies never would have been made. A 8-10 episode series covering each book makes way more sense and will include a lot of things that were cut from 3-7

It's called nostalgia.
A lot of the people who grew up reading the books now have children. While the movies are certainly out there, it will be very satisfying to a lot of these Potter fans to be able to sit down with their children week-to-week watching a new adaptation of the books they grew up loving.

Of course. Every smart kid will be black

Plus, we're talking about Britain, in a time prior to them committing suicide by letting hordes of hostile foreigners into their country.

you do realize Rowling never specified Hermione's race? Just that she had frizzy hair and dark skin compared to Ron's?
Seems like such an insignificant thing to harp on.

Well, there are illustrations which were included with the original books where she's clearly white

I mean, I don't have any beef with Rowling insinuating that based solely on the manuscript she wrote. It's a fictional story, and I don't believe skin color should matter (except when it's arbitrarily changed for socio-political reasons).
But when you agree to illustrate and cinematize that manuscript, you pretty much forfeit the idea that the characters can look "however you want them to look." Emma Watson was obviously chosen for a reason - ostensibly because Rowling said "yes, that's definitely Hermione"; I don't think they drew Watson's name out of a hat.
So with all due respect to Rowling, she can't have her cake and eat it too.

it seems too soon for something like this. It doesn't feel like anyone is tired of the movies, and HBO is trying to fill the gap GoT left. I'll definitely watch, but could have waited another 5-10 years for them to reboot it.

a good example of this being able to expand on the books is Ginny Weasley.
Based on the movies Harry should have ended up with Cho. Getting with Ginny just seemed forced.
In the books they flesh out how Harry has been obsessing about Ginny and how he really cared for her and liked her. She's a way better character in the books also. Even though her actress is very good in the movies she had shite scripts to work with.

Yeah Rowling already showed us what Hermione looks like, numerous times. She isn't black. There are even illustrated versions of the books now. She can retcon her characters however she wants but that doesn't mean I'm going to support it.

But, she virtue signals with the best of them, like when she declared Dumbledore was gay for no other reason than to placate the lunatic fringe. Her tweet is not surprising.

I don't care much about if Hermione is cast as a black girl. I'm not going to behold that character to being white simply because of an illustration. Her being white isn't an important aspect of the character. To stick to the source materials, just have a sharp girl with frizzy hair.
Now if they change Ron, then yeah there is no defense to that.

It bothers him than any character is black. You should have seen his melt when they had the old black Captain America in that Disney+ show
