Does anyone have a recommendation for real olive oil that they like. Thanks in advance.

the best supermarket oil i've found is california olive ranch. all of the imported supermarket oils are substandard
if you want the good stuff go to a specialty grocer or italian importer

Costco usually has some artisanal (for lack of a better phrase) bottle...not the giant kirkland one.

We found out that you can buy this stateside after visiting the vineyard on the side of Mt. Vesuvius. It's $30 for a 500ml but we only use it as an fishing oil.

I get my olive oil from Red Stick Spice company in BR. They have many flavors of olive oil that can enhance a dish. Otherwise, I use Vigo and I like it. Ive heard of
Messiniako olive oil being excellent but havent gotten my hands on it yet.

California is a pretty crazy state, but one of their advertising laws is that if you say something is x on the label of your product, then it has to be or do x.
So California olive ranch is required by law to be 100% olive oil, while many European oils are primarily other oils mixed with olive.

Someone in my extended family imports olive oil by the barrel. The old family from Italy handles it on the Italy side. Not sure who it comes from exactly because by the time it makes it to me it is in a plain bottle.

Eh. From what I've read, it's the imported Italian and Greek olive oils that are the worst offenders when it comes to being adulterated. Spanish and French seem to be the best numbers wise when it comes to European imports.

quote:It used to be entirely from California requiring it to be pure olive oil. Now the bottle says it includes oil from other countries as well. As I understand it, there is a significant issue with non olive oil being labeled olive oil in other countries.

I buy Terra Delyssa. Single origin Tunisian, reasonably priced, available at Winn Dixie.

Pay attention to exp dates. It goes rancid after about a year. I believe new oil is available around Feb typically.

Olive Oil Loversis a company that searches for pure OOs around the world. They have a ton of info on each one, and they are exceptional oils at fair prices.
The one I currently have they are sold out of, but you can find just about anything here. I currently have an Italian for every day use and a Greek one for sweet uses. I bought a bag in box so that it lasts a long time.

We buy all of ours straight from the source and ship it back. Left is Italian and right is Spanish.
